Chickenpox advice re infectious period - not typical, few symptoms

My 6yr old DS has chickenpox for the second time, also v mild. Just a few spots, not particularly itchy, no temp, feeling normal (high energy!) in himself. They appeared last Friday but we've kept him off school since and away from other people. We know it's chickenpox because he sat next to a girl at school who had very itchy spots (!).
ALL the advice we have received says we have to wait to send him back to school until the spots have scabbed over - but they weren't typical to begin with, they're just gently fading. He feels totally fine so I am wondering when we can send him back in this case?
We've looked online, spoken to the school and phoned 111 but everyone just keeps talking about the scabs, even when we say he hasn't got any and the spots are fading away.
It's beginning to feel a bit ridiculous keeping him off but I don't want him to infect anyone either so any insight would be appreciated!
