Tuesday last week my DD woke up with awful smelling urine. It stunk the whole room out -she hadn’t leaked either. I called the doctors and took a sample in. They told me she had high (luctolytes) I think it was called -excuse my spelling this is what it sounded like over the phone! Nurse told me not to worry wasn’t high enough to indicate infection and wee smell could be down to anything.

Anyway the smell got stronger and stronger over the course of 4 days I called back and they said the lab have not been able to grow any bacteria so no infection. Friday night she was up all night arching her back and ‘jumping’ in her sleep. Woke up with a small amount of green type discharge in her nappy and a slight raised temp. Her temperature sits at 36 but it was 37. Called 111 and the OOH GP saw her and said she had blood in her urine dip test.
We was given a prescription of Trimethroprim but we have just got to day 3 and her temperature is still sitting at 37 and she still has slightly off smelling wee. Not as bad as the other day but is this typical for anyone that has had experience with this in their DC?

I called doc and he said just give her 2 days extra dose and not to worry as 37 isn’t a ‘temperature’ even though it’s not her usual body temperature. I’m very concerned that these aren’t going to work. He said they are strong and doesn’t understand why they wouldn’t work and was very dismissive.

Do I need to take her to A&E or just wait and see over the next few days? She’s eating etc but I’m petrified after going on google and her latest urine wasn’t sent to a lab!

Thanks in advance sorry for the essay.

Unless she is suddenly much worse I do think you need to finish up the course of antibiotics and then see where she’s at.
You’ve still got a couple of days to go? And you said her urine seems to be returning to normal? What makes you believe they’re not working other than a very slightly raised temp?

I would finish the whole course before you start to worry too much - UTIs are not, in themselves, a problem. The problem is if they are persistent or recurring.

The strange smelling wee is less of a concern as it could be related to other things. Pain, blood in the urine, red/inflamed genitals would be things the doctor would want to see and deal with.

Obviously try to get her to drink as much as possible and see how she is in a few days.

Have you increased her fluids ?

Nottie54321 · 07/03/2022 17:20

Thanks yes increased her fluids. They said on Saturday she had blood present in her urine and she had some back pain last night flinching again as she tried to sleep. I thought temperature would usually go by now they told me 3 days worth originally and now he said just to try another 2 days as she doesn’t seem back to herself yet. Never experienced a UTI in a child before but I know when I have had them usually much better by day 2 so was worrying x
