5month old only weight bearing on one leg

My son is 5 months old, always been a big strong lad and always weight bearded on both legs. Suddenly today I've noticed he's holding his right leg up now and isn't bearing weight on it at all. When laid on his back he also isn't kicking actively with it.

Should I be worried? He doesn't seem in pain at all when I move his legs hips knees or feet. He seems symmetrical in terms of creases in his groin. Hip checks at birth were normal. Is this an a&e job or call gp/HV Monday?

It’s a 111 job. You will probably end up in A&E. DS had similar and it was a virus of all things!

What kind of virus could cause not using one leg?

DS ended up in hospital for a week at 11 mo due to a virus, a few weeks later he stopped weight bearing on one leg and they told me to go to A&E to rule out infection or sepsis caused by the initial virus. (It wasn't and in typical fashion as soon as we came home he started weight bearing as normal again!!) Sorry that doesn't answer what type of virus but wanted to say it is possible. If your little one doesn't have any other signs of distress or symptoms of being unwell they might tell you just to keep a mindful eye for the next day or two, but I'd personally call 111 if you don't think it's a sprain or anything like that. Hope they get better soon x

Hey, how is your little one getting on @HopelesslyHopeful87

HopelesslyHopeful87 · 16/01/2022 14:12

We are still in hospital. He's had lots of xrays, orthopaedic opinion and now bloods.

Thank you for asking I don't really know much it's very busy here and things seems to be taking ages.

Oh I’m sorry to hear that but glad you are in the right place! Sending positive vibes and hope you get home safe and well soon x

All bloods were clear, assessment fine and xrays clear. Watch and wait and follow up with orthopaedics in a week. It's been a very long day 😴

This happened to my nephew and was a virus too.
