Feeding my baby at 5 months

I know the recommendation is that babies begin eating at 6 months, but my baby is about 1 kilo bigger than the "average weight". I want to start feeding him as I think he's hungry now. Have any other moms begun feeding their baby at 5 months and what was your experience?

I dont see what weight has to do with readiness for solid food.

If he is hungry then give him more milk.

Babies get negligible calories from weaning (not least as most of it ends up on the floor). If a baby is hungry, the answer is generally milk which is calorie dense and contains the nutrients they need at this stage.

I've started wearing mine at 5.5m. He's able to sit up, hold food and bring it to his mouth. He was so curious watching us eat, thought we would let him join in family meal times.

However what this looks like is him chomping on a single stick of cucumber or piece of broccoli. Most of it comes out of his mouth and onto his bib. I think it's going to take a while before he gets any calories this way! He loves it though and it's fun.

There's less calories in solid food than milk.

Started weaning our daughter at 5.5 month old. She was having 6 8oz bottles a day and screamed the house down as she was Still hungry. She had reflux and any more milk just made her throw up. Started weaning her on purees (veg) which settled her. Youll know when your child is ready.

Weight is not the relevant factor. Age is

Hi OP, my baby was under dietician care and she told me 6 months is the absolute latest you should start weaning. I "officially" started at 5.5 months because at 5 months my baby was grabbing food out of my and my toddler's hands / plates and shoving it in his mouth quicker than I could sometimes stop him. Maybe speak to your Health Visitor for advice?

I weaned mine at 5 months as he was sitting fully unsupported and trying to grab my food off me!
