Lump in son’s neck

BA36 · 30/11/2021 22:24

I noticed a lump in the lower part of my sons neck last week. I could see it and then felt it, it pushes in when you press it but it’s around a pea-size maybe a bit bigger.
I’ve got health anxiety so am trying not to panic but a week on a it’s still there and I am worried. He’s had a cold for ages and did have a blocked/inflamed ear a couple of weeks ago, should I take him back to the doctor? Looking for some reassurance that it’s normal!

It’s funny the things that get us, mine is lumps! I just want to damn thing to go down so I can stop worrying. GP said it wasn’t anything to worry about but if we are concerned go back in 4 weeks and he can arrange for an ultrasound, but that’s freaking me out now because it’s been 3 weeks and it’s not gone down and He said 4 weeks so Im worrying why it’s still there!

My son had the same in his neck and we were referred to the hospital. It was all fine and same as many others on here, it was just an enlarged lymph node. They can hang around for months. The GP said 4 weeks as many things are self limiting and after a few weeks symptoms do often go away on there own. Hopefully everything will be absolutely fine but I know it’s difficult not to worry.

Rhi11 · 23/12/2021 20:28

Going through the same thing right now, multiple GPS saying the same swollen lymph node. But I always ask the same question WHY? he has no infection. Such a worry!

Benjispruce5 · 23/12/2021 22:09

@Rhi11 children’s immune system is building so they respond to lots of different things and nodes take a while to go down each time. I see them all the time in primary children that are otherwise well. So wrinkly eczema can trigger them .

Benjispruce5 · 23/12/2021 22:09

Sometimes not so wrinkly!Confused

liveforsummer · 23/12/2021 22:33

Definitely sounds like a lymph node. I get it a lot. Nothing to worry about but for your own peace of mind get it checked

BA36 · 23/12/2021 22:52

Thank you. The GP said lymph node. He’s had it 4 weeks now, not sure if it’s gone down as I’m trying not to prod it! He did say to go back after 4 weeks if we are worried. He’s absolutely fine in himself (in terms of general health) but like most kids at the moment has ongoing cold and coughs and bugs.
I’m hoping he continues to be well and I can stop worrying!

I don’t think my DD’s went down. I just stopped noticing it as she grew.

Groapple · 23/12/2021 22:55

Just to reassure you OP my child had one and it was visible for a couple of years.

BA36 · 23/12/2021 23:07

Thank you that is reassuring! For all I know it may have been there years and I’ve only just noticed it!

Just to update he’s now had it 7 weeks and it’s still there, although no bigger.
Called my GP and spoke over the phone (not the one that examined him last) and she said she would speak to the paediatric department at the hospital to see what they advise. She came back to say they suggested an ultrasound. So now waiting for that. He’s still okay in himself, we have had covid over Christmas and new year. He keeps clearing his throat a lot but hoping that’s just sore throat from covid (I have the same).
Am so panicked though and scared they will find something not normal. It’s quite firm, not fixed in place but not freely moveable, about 1.5 cms.
Anyone had an ultrasound and it was normal?

It's so worrying isn't. I'm the same boat as you got to ring GP on Monday we were told to wait a few weeks it's still there had multiple GPS looking at it. They don't seem concerd . I do. I won't settle till we get an ultrasound too wish you all the best

BA36 · 16/01/2022 21:42

Does your son have any other symptoms bar the lump? I told my Gp I wanted serious things ruled out, so I think that’s why they’ve referred for an ultrasound but I had to be quite forthright!

My son went through exactly the same thing. He had an ultrasound and it's an enlarged lymph node. Still there a year later and has neither grown nor shrunk.

BA36 · 16/01/2022 23:01

Thank you, it’s reassuring to hear from people who had ultrasounds and it was fine!

No other symptoms at all .saw GP he is referring us to Peds so hopefully here back soon.

Elliejane · 17/01/2022 12:26

Hi
My son had a lump on his neck and I worried and worried . I saw 3 gp and a specialist and they all said it would have be quite big to be anything to investigate. I never had a scan but 4 years later lump is still there .

BA36 · 31/01/2022 21:22

How is your son now? Has he been seen by paediatrics?
We have an ultrasound on the 16th, his cough/clearing throat is worse despite antibiotics so I’m trying not to freak out even more and not connect them

I saw a GP about a lump on my daughters neck today, it's below her ear, kidney bean size and wiggles around under the skin. She is referring her for a ultrasound. Feeling rather nervous about it all.

BA36 · 03/02/2022 16:08

@bigbadgoof my son's has now been there for over 2 months, we have an ultrasound booked on the 16th. I'm worrying like mad! Kidney bean size is actually normal I think, and if it wiggles around that's a good sign. Enlarged lymph nodes are only considered swollen if they are bigger than 1.5 cms, and I've read lots (and been told by a couple of doctors) that under 2cms they are almost always benign.
Despite knowing this I am still really worried though!

Thank you for this reply. It's so harm not to worry about anything lump/bump related isn't it! Really good to hear you're daughter is being seen soon. It sounds like they are worry but are being diligent to put your mind at ease?

bigbadgoof · 03/02/2022 16:22

@BA36 your son sorry! A bit all over the place today. Sorry also for all the typos

KathyB18 · 10/02/2022 22:23

How did the scan go for your son? I am going through something similar with my daughter.

BA36 · 10/02/2022 23:27

His scan is on the 16th, over a month after we were referred, so I’m hoping that means they don’t seem it as urgent. I’ll update after!
