Banana flavoured antibiotics, the worst!

My son currently has a chest infection and mixed with asthma he's been off school suffering quite badly, he was prescribed the dreaded yellow medicine which made him vomit because he hates the taste so much, called the drs and got him switched to a different one, I've gone to pick it up and it's the same flavour!! Do drs not do any other flavour of antibiotics!? I'm dreading having to give it to him for 5 days, he'll happily take calpol why do they not have that flavour for prescribed medications? 😭

That stuffs the worst! I remember being force fed it. Hope they switch it over

RedCarsGoFaster · 17/11/2021 16:07

There's an orange flavoured one but I can't recall which antibiotic it is.

Will your DS accept the antibiotic mixed into a cup of banana milkshake?

BertieBotts · 17/11/2021 16:09

How old is he? Maybe you could get it in tablet form?

lollipoprainbow · 17/11/2021 16:10

My dd has just finished her last dose of this vile medicine thank goodness. Surely by now they can make it in different fruit flavours for kids !!

SparklesAndUnicorns · 17/11/2021 16:11

@inmyslippers I'm going to call again tomorrow and just double check there's only one flavour I'm having a nightmare!

@RedCarsGoFaster defo next step is mixing it with something a bit more tasty he doesn't like banana milkshake but going to see if it will be ok mixed with juice or something

DS2 has been on 2 sets recently and not one of them was banana. Both for tonsillitis and penicillin based.

SparklesAndUnicorns · 17/11/2021 16:12

@BertieBotts he's 5 so defo no tablets 😭

@lollipoprainbow I know surely they can't just have one disgusting flavour!

@SweetPeaPods ah strange my sons been on amoxicillin and now a different brand that's a bit stronger I'm not sure of the name but we've only every had the banana flavoured one

I loved that medicine as a kid!

Piggyk2 · 17/11/2021 16:13

The yellow one is popular with kids. I think they do a pink one... its not penicillin that is by far worst I was shocked when I couldn't get DS to take it when he was younger. Until I tasted it myself!

Fluffycloudland77 · 17/11/2021 16:14

I hated that as a kid.

When I got tonsillitis at 30 I had strawberry flavour penicillin as I so swollen.

SparklesAndUnicorns · 17/11/2021 16:15

@teaandtoastwithmarmite I did too! Both my kids absolutely hate it!

@Piggyk2 oh gosh I don't think I could deal with that, he's been on steroid tablets that I've had to mix with water before and he straight out refuses to drink it

SparklesAndUnicorns · 17/11/2021 16:16

@Fluffycloudland77 maybe penicillin isn't used for chest infections I don't have e a clue tbh 🤔

Fluffycloudland77 · 17/11/2021 16:19

I think amoxicillin is usual for them, dh is allergic to penicillin and they always ask when his chest is bad.

When the cat had liquid antibiotics it was pineapple flavour. Vet and I both baffled to why they developed a fruity flavour for cats.

gogohm · 17/11/2021 16:19

There used to be a pink one too, my dd wouldn't even be in the same room as a banana, really not kidding.

GiltEdges · 17/11/2021 16:25

Do drs not do any other flavour of antibiotics!?

It isn't the antibiotic itself, it's the suspension. The pharmacy make it up on site. I told the pharmacist last time DS had tonsillitis that he didn't like the yellow one, so we were given a pink (strawberry?) one instead.

SparklesAndUnicorns · 17/11/2021 16:27

He's just thrown it up again! He took it about 15 mins ago it's really not agreeing with him 😩😩

OP posts:
SparklesAndUnicorns · 17/11/2021 16:29

Not even sure it's the taste anymore I'm at a loss!

You could try mixing the dose with a bit of flavoured yoghurt if you have some at home, it may tone down the yucky taste factor?
My eldest DD used to hate it too but my younger child happily wolfs it down lol

Constance1 · 17/11/2021 16:34

My son loves the banana flavour. He got it from the dentist one time and still talks fondly of it 😂

Lsquiggles · 17/11/2021 16:40

The yellow medicine is the only medicine my DD doesn't make a fuss about, getting calpol in her is a nightmare! I remember the yellow medicine from my childhood and it makes me shudder thinking about it, the taste and texture is so wrong Envy

TheYearOfSmallThings · 17/11/2021 16:45

My DS loves the yellow one. I never had that as a child, but I used love red Actifed.

Fluffycloudland77 · 17/11/2021 17:15

It’s possible there’s an ingredient in there his stomach is always going to say a hard No to.

If I take paracetamol on the first day of a period I’m sick within 15 minutes. Any other day I’m fine.

Bwix · 17/11/2021 17:19

We had this with dd at age 6. We were given tablets which we taught her to swallow (broken up). You can start with a mini M&m or tic-tab to get them used to taking tablets.

BertieBotts · 17/11/2021 17:21

Hmm we managed to get tablets into DS1 when he was 6 once when we were on holiday and had forgotten the calpol. If you cut them up or crush you can mix with a spoonful of jam or yoghurt or ice cream. (Actually ice cream works well for the banana as it's so cold).

Antibiotic ones are often capsules so even easier as you open the capsule and mix the contents with whatever.

If he can't keep it down you'll have to go back to the doctor/pharmacy.
