How to tame my 9 month olds hair

My sons not long turned 9 months old and I wouldn't say his hair is long enough yet to require a hair cut however it always goes matted on one patch at the back whenever he sits or lies down. It goes back to normal after a bath but he's always just got that one patch. I've tried just baby shampoo alone and I've tried conditioner but hasn't made a difference. Also on the one side of his head by his ear the hair always sticks out to the side but doesn't do it on the other side 😂 any ideas how I can keep his hair looking tidy and unknotted for more than about half an hour? I'll add a picture just so you can see the length of his hair, it's not long at all. I know he's not gonna have perfectly neat hair all day, he's 9 months old but his hair does feel quite fine so don't like having to get the knots out the back ☹️
