Sudden hip pain in 12 yr old

My dd got up off the sofa tonight and literally can’t weight bare. Her hip is agony and we had to carry her to bed!!

She’s on growth hormone therapy.

I wondered if it was sciatica but I’ve just read that it is usually felt in the back of the leg. DD’s pain is in the front of her hip/groin area.

Do I need to see a doctor tomorrow or see how it goes??

She…

Yes she’s deficient. Cortisol and GH.

I’ve done sick day rules. She seems utterly fine in herself apart from the hip 🤷🏻‍♀️

How is she doing Flossie?

Flossie44 · 14/08/2021 19:09

She’s in so much pain. Managing on the crutches but lots of tears of pain.

The mri is Tuesday and ortho consultant Thursday.

Thanks for asking Flowers

Hope the results are helpful. Be kind to yourself in the waiting. Flowers

Poor thing that's really rough. I hope you get some answers soon.

Ietthemeatcake · 15/08/2021 10:36

My DD had sudden onset hip pain and couldn't bear any weight. It was irritable hip. Fine after 1 week of bed rest and a few tests.
Fingers crossed your DD has the same.

Flossie44 · 17/08/2021 15:02

A bruise has now developed on the hip. But she hasn’t banged it, and the original sudden pain was so instant as she stood from sitting on the sofa!!

Why would a bruise appear over the painful hip without having an blow or bang to the hip??

Had the mri today. Consultant on Thursday. I wasn’t Unduly worried but I am a bit now.....

She’s still not able to weight bear nearly a week later

That’s really stressful. Hope you get some answers from the consultant today. How is she in herself?

Flossie44 · 19/08/2021 14:31

Sadly no answers at all. Zero!! Told to weight bear and come back in 3 weeks to see paediatric orthopaedic chap.
Easy for them to say weight bear...can’t even put a toe on the ground without screaming her hips hurting!! 😫😫

Bloody hell three weeks is a long time to wait!

Flossie44 · 19/08/2021 15:15

It is when I feel so helpless as a mum..watching my little girl in so much pain 😫😫

Is a private consultation sooner an option for you?

Flossie44 · 19/08/2021 16:36

The mri and X-ray are clear. So they’re saying there’s absolutely no explanation 🤷🏻‍♀️

She’s had episodes of CRPS in the past with fixed dystonia, so maybe it’s a flare up of that. Although that wouldn’t account for the bruising and is very uncommon in the hip.
She’s just so devastated as she’s a dancer, and that’s now been taken away from her.
I just want to make her better 😞

It must be awful to see her in pain like that. And not be able to dance

GingerbreadHead · 29/08/2021 18:43

How are things now @Flossie44?
Im going through something very similar with my 9yo DD. She's had leg pain for about 2 months now, came on suddenly and she's in agony with it and struggling to walk. We've had various tests and appointments and now just waiting on results from the Mri but I'm worried that they won't find anything, everyone is very puzzled what the problem could be.
Like you I hate watching her in pain, it's so awful and frustrating. She's also a dancer and is supposed to be returning in September but I'm not sure she'll be able to ☹️

My son had this a few years back, hip pain and a constant limp that developed over the space of a week. He ended up being diagnosed with transient synovitis after mri, X-rays and ortho consultants. They reckon it was related to the chicken pox virus that he had a few months before. Was monitored over 12 months to see if Jul was deteriorating and to rule out perthes disease. Googling it drove me mad as I had convinced myself he had leukaemia as a local kid had similar. But bloods were done in a&e to rule that out straight away!!
