Do the spots for chickenpox look different to hand foot and mouth?

Hi All

So my 8 month old had a high temp for a da
and then broke out in spots starting on his exzema patches and then all over they look like red blisters of various sizes some with crusts some not, I think he also has them in his mouth as he will only take a few sips of milk or water and then cry, I've googled and I'm not sure which it is is there any actual difference in the look of the rash or spots between the two?

Where are the spots? HFM would normally be on hands, feet and in the mouth but can also present in in the nappy area. CP would be more spread out and on the torso too

They're everywhere but not as much on his hands to nappy area, legs backs and front, ankles arms chest and mouth I can see a blister on his mtongue too I'm just worried as he's not eating or drinking anything even after Calpol I don't know how to get enough liquid into him

It sounds like chickenpox. I'd call Gp for advice though as he's so young.
A syringe may work for drinking

Managed to get an appointment I feel like the doctor had made his mind up from the telephone call we went in he looked at and said looks viral just keep him hydrated give Calpol, I said is it checked pox or hand foot and mouth and he said no pox look different and hfam is also on palms and soles of feet! I was better off with Doctor Google? Thank you for responding xXx

If you can find it at the chemist, I recommend calamine cream over calamine lotion. Less drying.

Doesn't look like chicken pox

DennisTMenace · 13/07/2021 15:43

It doesn't look like the spots mine had when they got chicken pox. That is in no way a medicine recommendation though! One of mine did get blisters inside mouth, the other didn't. I would keep an eye on symptoms. If it is between 2 viruses then the treatment would just be to alleviate symptoms anyway. Just make sure if things get worse you are prepared to call the doctor again.

I agree.

Have you tried an antihistamine?

twinmum86 · 14/07/2021 12:56

The rash does look viral to me. One of my twins used to always get this. The mouth sore though sounds like it could well be hand foot and mouth. It is a virus, so a viral rash all over at the same time would make sense

Thank you so much I've not had a chance to get on here for a few days, they've scabbed over now hopefully it's the first and last of this! He's gotten into the habit of me laying in the cot with him untill he's assleep as I was holding his hand to stop him scratching, so we've gone from waking up once to about 5 times a night now!
