5yo coughing so much she’s vomiting, what should she eat?

5yo started with a cold and vomiting on Tuesday night - she does tend to vomit with a cold, not just from the mucus but bringing up all food and fluids, seems to be her body’s way of dealing with it. Today she’s come down with an awful cough, which is making her vomit just as she’s started eating again. Should I let her eat whatever she wants or stick to bland foods so as not to upset her stomach? Not sure if it will make much difference when the vomiting is due to coughing

Maybe not eat at all for a while? Or try liquid food to see if that helps.

I didn't realise vomiting can be a sign of tonsillitis until this happened with my ds. GP recommended diluted apple juice to give some energy until able to eat. In DS case the tonsillitis did requite antibiotics.

I’d give food that doesn’t need to be in the stomach too long, something that slips straight down. Such as custard and soup.

It's not that anything is upsetting her stomach - it will be that the muscles that coordinate coughing are over doing it and involving stomach muscles too this making her sick.

I'd stick to stuff she wants to eat but that's easy to throw up.

I wouldn't insist on any one food because she's puking. Just the smell of chicken soup makes my DH feel sick because it's what he was always fed when ill

Ice lollies, loads of them for soothing sore throat from coughing and fluid input.
Jelly, water Mellon, stuff like that. Easily absorbed and digested.

Thanks for replies, she’s having a bit of what she fancies and that seems to be staying down so far x
