Are dental check ups still not available near you?

I'm wondering if the situation is the same everywhere?

It's been a year since my 14 year old last had a check up and I've been told to call back in the new year. I don't think there is anything wrong but the reassurance helps when he still has several baby teeth and doesn't have his 12 year old molars yet. I thought dentists had PPE now? Are check ups going ahead anywhere?

They dont need full ppe just for a check up. Dentists are doing check ups , but if they cant then treat problems it just seems pointless.

I wonder why our clinic aren't doing any yet then? I was told they are only doing them if you have pain, not just for a regular check up. DS seems so late with his teeth compared to the charts.

Mine isn't doing them either. Something along the lines of having to clean and leave the rooms empty for an hour between patients means they can only see a few urgent appointments per day so checkups have been cancelled

Notverygrownup · 14/10/2020 20:04

Yes, they are available near us. Both my kids booked in for next year, so it's not everywhere.

StellaGib · 14/10/2020 20:10

My kids all had a checkup a month or so ago.

Not available near us. We're in England and are NHS - does it differ by country or whether you are private?

ShatnersBaboon · 14/10/2020 20:16

Mine is still dealing only with emergencies and urgent cases. I do wish they'd crack on with opening up (our check-up appointments in March were cancelled), but I do understand their reluctance; it's a small practice led by an older husband and wife team.

We're in Scotland, we all had our check ups in August, which had originally been due in April.

mackerella · 14/10/2020 20:23

No check ups for adults or children where we are (E of England) - only emergency treatment.

SpeckledyHen · 14/10/2020 20:25

Are you talking about NHS or private ?
My private dentist is open for everything . Quite a few hoops to jump through .4 medical forms to complete before appointment. Arrive 5 minutes early - no earlier. Stay in car , check in on-line from car park . Collected by nurse. In through door already open .Sanitise hands then wash hands . Temperature taken and few questions. Hairnet and gloves on . Straight into surgery . Handbag into box . Open wide etc ....pay bill . depart via different route , throw PPE into foot operated bin . Sanitise . Out through already open door .

Are you talking about NHS or private ? NHS, why can one open but not the other?

My dentist isn't doing them. We had check ups cancelled earlier this year and have been rebooked for the second half of next year. By then it'll be over 18 months since any of us saw a dentist. It's really crap.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 14/10/2020 20:36

No check ups where we are in Essex. DD was due to be referred for her braces but he is refusing to do that without seeing her even though he said he would do it as soon as she turned 12. Thinking we will have to pay for treatment now.

kowari · 14/10/2020 20:49

Can you pay privately for one off check up? When do you worry if they don't have all their adult teeth?

NHS not available in South of England..

WotsitWiggle · 14/10/2020 20:51

Our dentist is leaving 60 minutes after each appointment, even though that's only needed after AGP. That's reducing available time for appointments so they are priotising people in pain (who are more likely to need AGP).

If you go private, you can visit evenings or weekends.

My March appointment was cancelled, I moved it to October, that's just been cancelled but now I have toothache so I am needing to go and they've got me in early next week.
