Two large soft lumps base of baby's head

She's 7 months old and I can't remember if my other two had this. Google throws up various scary options but none fit exactly. She's fit and well otherwise and hitting all milestones. Any Mumsnet experience/opinions?

Hi there, my baby boy is 4 months old and has the same thing. He's had them for a month or so.
We all including him got covid at Christmas time and than he got an ear infection 2 weeks after covid, took him the doctor and he said nothing to worry about that their just lymph nodes and inflamed from infection but they r normal on babies. He finished him antibiotics over weekend and half ago and no longer has ear infection or sick however he still has them on back of head.

Hi, does anyone have any updates? My 8 months old has these and I've noticed them from around 4 months. I took her to the GP when I first noticed them who thought they were probably muscle related. However, I'm still a bit worried. I am going to take her back to the GP next week (on holiday at the moment), but I'm currently freaking out again!

susan4real · 18/04/2023 14:09

@RoLaren any update

Littlelighthouse · 18/04/2023 19:53

I had my daughter's checked again yesterday by a different GP who said she thought it was just bone in her skull. She had a really good feel and couldn't feel anything concerning, she thinks it's just how she is

My daughter has just turned 2 and I've just noticed two hard lumps at the back of either side of her head. She itches her head a lot and has a bit of eczema, but I don't think it's that causing these hard lumps. I'm taking her to the docs next week to see what they say. She's eating well and otherwise healthy, apart from occasionally feeling tired.

Hi! This is the first time I have used this service. But my baby is 7 months and I noticed his lymph nodes at the back of his neck raise after he was 2 weeks of antibiotics… I took him to the doctors and they said there inflamed from his previous viral infection though he was 2 weeks clear of any infection. Fast forward 2 weeks and he’s still got them.. not showing any sign of getting any better. I can feel 2 pea size moveable lumps (which I’m aware is a good sign if they move etc) but he’s still got this bulge around them.. I’m not sure if it’s normal neck muscle which may get me larger on one side or neck fat? Or if it’s linked to his lymph nodes. Worried ivf mumma.

Unseenentity · 26/04/2023 15:54

It's quite common for lymph nodes to stick around even for months - if the child is otherwise well that is highly reassuring that they're just behaving normally rather than anything worrying.

Firstmummyc · 27/04/2023 19:25

This is a clear photo of how his head looks on that side. A clear bulge around the area of the lymph nodes… please can anyone give any advice? The gp said the lymph nodes feel completely normal in size and are no concern… but this to me does not seem normal

Silkwoo · 26/07/2023 05:50

I noticed my son's own after is second scheduled vaccine. Which was around 4 or 5 months he's 8 months now and they're still there. I was told by the pediatrician it's nothing to be alarmed about.

Momof3wildboys · 11/08/2023 18:08

Hi!
my 7 month old has the exact same thing. Our Dr said the same thing too. Did you end up getting an answer from anyone? I am also concerned. Thank you!

Littlelighthouse · 11/08/2023 21:10

Hi @Momof3wildboys we've had no answers. There's been no change in them though, haven't grown or anything

Momof3wildboys · 12/08/2023 02:04

That’s great to hear - no growth or anything. My son’s looks exactly like your pic. I saw my Dr today and she wants us to get an ultrasound on it to make sure it’s nothing scary… which has rattled me lol She says she isn’t concerned and thinks it’s a lipoma. Ultrasound to be safe. Ugh.

MummyDiaries · 07/12/2023 00:02

@Momof3wildboys I just discovered 3 lumps on my baby - 2 small ones at the back of her skull towards the bottom and one biggish one at the back of her head under her skull. Saw the GP today who said it is lipoma and no further action required but I am surprised she didn’t at least request an ultrasound. I am freaking out that it may be something else or even if lipoma that it might be near a nerve or sth. May I ask how your ultrasound went? Any wisdom you can share? Many thanks in advance.

Momof3wildboys · 07/12/2023 09:05

@MummyDiaries Hi! Yes so we had our ultrasound and nothing abnormal was found. They said there was no fluid, no lump, no nothing. They also said if it gets larger or worse in any way next step would be an MRI. So since that answer didn’t really tell me why it’s there I continued my pursuit. I then saw my Natruopath and Osteopath. Both told me it was a lymph node. My Natruopath path said lymph nodes are similar to a balloon in the sense that once you infant a balloon it never goes back to its original size fully so that it could be always “there” but sometimes seems larger or smaller depending on drainage (fighting a cold, teething, etc) I have been using Roscoe’s Lymph drainage cream on the back of his head around both lymph nodes there to help them drain (even though the other lymph node isn’t swollen at all.) My Osteopath said it was a lymph node as well and she did a little work on his head and neck to encourage drainage. Perhaps finding a Natruopath and having your little one in for a visit could be helpful. My Natruopath specializes in women and children 0-16.
If you Google about lymph nodes around the occipital bone you will see some great diagrams that show the glymphatic system (lymph system in the head.)
As for Lipomas, my husband has lipomas all over his body. Random lumps of benign tissue. He’s had a few removed because they were bothering him but the Dr suggests you leave them. I would for sure talk with a Natruopath about them. I bet they would have some type of something to help with those. But again, from anything we have been told they are not worrisome.
I always chat with Dr’s about any issues with my 3 sons but then I always work with my Natruopath and Osteopath who have helped me and my children in the most incredibly ways.
I hope this has helped in any way!

MummyDiaries · 07/12/2023 14:06

@Momof3wildboys aahhh bless you!!! Thank you so much! 😭🙏🏼 I have a 2 month old baby and I took her to an Osteopath who was the one that found and told me about the lumps. She thinks it’s lymph nodes as well and was surprised about the GP’s diagnosis but more so approach. I spent all of last night googling 🫣and indeed based on the location thought it might be occupital nodes. Will continue seeing the osteo but will look into finding a naturapath as well. Thanks again sooo much for the detailed respond. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

Momof3wildboys · 07/12/2023 14:20

@MummyDiaries Oh so happy! Exhale. I am so happy to share anything because I know us Moms can worry ourselves sick. Hope our convo helps another Mom out there too!

KatieinMaine · 11/07/2025 16:54

Thank you all so much! I have a 7 month old now and I’ve been concerned because he has the same 2 lumps.

Any updates on your little ones? I’m hoping everything turned out okay and they are healthy as can be!

Nikkib0h · 12/07/2025 01:12

Hey mama, I commented on this post in 2020 and forgot my sign in info but got an email saying there was a new comment and felt it was my due diligence to let you know, my baby who is now 4.5, outgrew this. We had an ultrasound done that came back normal (although the tech seemed annoyed, my pediatrician agreed it was worth checking). So I am happy to say my babe just had an a defined head that needed a little more chunk to it. Looks completely normal 4 years later! But if you do have concern, def request an ultrasound to investigate a little more. Always nice to have PEACE of mind. 🙂 hope this settles your mind a bit as I was you only a few years ago!

KatieinMaine · 14/07/2025 16:27

Thank you so much for replying! What a relief to know your little one is doing great. My son is normal (if that even exists haha) in all other aspects so I’m sure he’s okay too but I’ll mention it to his doc. Time flies, I know I’ll have a 4 year old soon 😅😅😂 Happy Summer!!
