My 8 year old dd came to me late last night and said she had a lump by her left nipple. It is hard and slightly bigger than a marble. You can’t see it but you can very definitely feel it under the skin. Nothing on the other side. I immediately panicked and of course being a Friday night I have to stress over it all weekend until the dr’s open Monday morning. I’ve been looking on google and wonder if it could be a ‘breast bud’ does anyone know what they feel like? How hard are they? I would really appreciate any advice very anxious mumma here.

My 10 year old has discovered her breast buds, they feel like marbles under the skin just now and roughly about a marble size. She only noticed because it was tender

I read your post and immediately thought breast bud.
Don't panic! They nearly always come one at a time.
The very most likely explanation is the start of breast development. My DD is 12 and one of my friends (DD same age) had exactly this - her DD had a firm lump and it was a breast bud.

My 9 year old has stated to mention nipple pain on one side and I too worried a bit then googled it and think it's breast bud formation. It can start at 8/9 years old. If your really worried perhaps take her to the doctors to put your mind at ease x

Sounds like breast buds to me, 8 is perfectly normal for puberty onset

Peanutbutteryogurt · 21/12/2019 20:39

I had these, at about 10 years old I think

TripleSeptic · 21/12/2019 20:39

Omg, I remember the pain of bumping them off the edge of my desk at school VIVIDLY. I wouldn't have asked my mum about it though. Poor wee love. See the doctor after Christmas if its worrying you though xx

Thank you so much for relying. I’ve been a bit of an anxious mess since last night. She has said it is tender and yesterday it was itchy. She just seems so young to be devilling breasts. And I imagined a breast bud might be soft and like a small pouch of tissue but this is defiantly a hard lump. I’m relieved to know this might be normal.

My dd had the hard lump behind one nipple around the same age. I asked a doctor (we were there for a separate reason and I just mentioned it) who confirmed breast buds. Like you I just thought she was too young. However, she's now 11 and still has only the breast buds, no sign of actual breasts, so it can take a very long time from initial development.

Just confirming what everyone else has said, very likely to be a breast bud. I had exactly the same thing with my daughter when she was 8, we spoke to the GP as we were there for something else and she confirmed it was a breast bud. My daughter is now 9 and a half and has a breast bud on each side.

Whatnowagnes · 27/12/2019 18:37

Another confirming it's almost certainly breast bud. So no need to worry.

I too remember at 10 years old when I woke to pain in both nipples and they were breast buds. SIL was 9 when she already had large breasts.
Age does vary as with onset of periods. Mine were one month before my 12th birthday but breasts had not grown much during that time.
It was a long time ago and could have been only one at first.
At 11 I had my first hormonal outburst Blush - stamping up the stairs and shutting myself in the bathroom with rage. Can't remember what over.
Good luck.
