Ear bands/plugs for swimming with grommets

Hi all, I'm wanting my 5 year old to start swimming lessons but he has grommets. I have found ear plugs and bands but wondered if anyone recommended any in particular and I was also wondering if children can hear with them in? Obviously it's a bit counter intuitive if he can't hear the instructor!

My ds wears the squishy moldable earplugs with his swim hat over the top. I think we just got them from the chemist.

He can hear the instructor OK - certainly better than he could before the grommets!

Oh, he's 8 btw, if that makes any difference.

Thanks beela, I wondered if a hat would do the job just as well.

We use the hat to help hold the earplugs in, I don't know if it would do the job on its own.

He used the earplugs without the cap when he went swimming with school this week, was also fine.

Sorry yes I meant instead of the band :)

We use an ear-BAND-IT (neoprene band) plus moldeable plus. Works well and good for hair washing etc.

My 3 year old son also uses the ear band-it earplugs. These were recommended by the paediatrician and he's been back at lessons for the last few months with them and can hear the instructor fine and they report his swimming is improving. We also bought the headband to use over them but haven't used it as he wasn't too keen The plugs stay in by themselves but the packaging is right when it says they don't last longer than two weeks.

Ds got fitted ones from ENT and then wears a swimming hat over the top. It works fine. It also makes him easy to spot in the pool as not many wear a hat.
