7 month old not sitting well at all

Hi everyone, my DD is 7 months old, and can only sit unaided for a very short amount of time, and even this is quite hunched over. Bizarrely, the only place she can do this is on a bed. She can't sit at all on any other surface. She is very strong in other ways, and gets around by rolling everywhere. She has strong legs, and when I put her in a sitting position, she refuses to stay in it, and instead pushes up on her legs to do supported standing. She just won't practise sitting at all. She either cries, or wants to do supported standing. Some 5 and 6 month olds at baby groups we go to can easily sit unsupported, while DD just can't. Is this something to worry about?

If she is on the move by rolling that probably is part of the reason.

Dd2 crawled by 5 months, walked by 8 months. She didn't sit until 11months, and wasn't even especially good at it then. Every time she was put in a sitting position she threw herself onto her tummy and crawled off (if she wasn't strapped in). So she never practiced.

Dd1 sat beautifully at 6 months, rarely fell over at all. She didn't crawl until 9 months, so she had lots of practice.

My boy didn’t actually sit unaided until he was 9 months (to the day). It just suddenly happened! I had been pretty worried until then. He skipped conventional crawling (did commando crawl instead) and walked at 14 months. He’s 2 now and gross motor development is fine.

This is almost certainly something that she will develop in time, so I wouldn't worry about it. She probably cries because it feels like an insecure and unfamiliar position. I would try sitting with her on the floor, with her between your legs but facing away from you, so that she is supported. If you distract her with some toys and playing clapping games, looking at pictures in books etc, she should start to build up familiarity and confidence with the position. As she gets happier you can gradually scooch backwards so that you are supporting her less and maybe replace with some cushions behind.

My daughter is 8 month and doesn’t sit for more than 30 seconds still not crawling but she is nearly there!! My older daughter who is 2 seemed to crawl before sitting properly and crawled at 6 month... I think just give them time sit them inbetween you legs on the floor and entertain with a toy maybe... all children are different don’t worry too much about it

Independent sitting should be a milestone reached anywhere between 6 and 10 months. Plenty of time yet.

why1stheRumgon3 · 22/02/2019 13:19

My dd is 7 months. She was sitting at 6 months no problem but she won't go on her tummy for more than 1minute, no sign of crawling and doesn't roll over back to front yet. I wouldn't be too worried yet they all do things at different times.

YoureAMeanOneMrGrinch · 22/02/2019 13:25

My son didn't sit up unaided until he was 10 months.
He started dragging/crawling from about 6 months and much preferred to be on his stomach than sitting up. I was so worried it would delay development as he wouldn't pull himself up, but he suddenly started pulling himself up from the lying down position!

I spoke to a HV and they were going to wait until he was about 1 and if he wasn't sitting up he would get referred for physio, but he did it in his own time.

I'd try not to worry too much yet.

Mine were later sitters, DD particularly; she was 9 months before she was stable. They're both fine now.

MaverickSnoopy · 22/02/2019 13:43

Please don't worry it will happen when she is ready.

DD1 didn't sit unsupported until nearly 9 months. She rolled everywhere and didn't crawl until she was 11 months and then started walking at 1yo.

DD2 sat at 5mo but never crawled until she was 2yo!! She just bum shuffled everywhere.

They're all different. I know it's hard when you see other babies doing it but there will be things they're not doing.

BertieBotts · 22/02/2019 13:44

No, don't worry. DS1 was like this too. He just doesn't like being still - why would be spend time learning to sit?

Smoggle · 22/02/2019 13:45

One of my babies sat very solidly at 5 months, the other two were more like 8 months. They walked at 10.5, 11 & 12 months so it didn't seem to make much difference.

Flatwhite32 · 22/02/2019 15:23

Thank you SO much everyone! I feel really reassured after reading your responses. She can't crawl yet, but she is desperately trying to commando crawl. @why1stheRumgon3 it sounds like our DC are the opposite! Mine won't sit, but rolls everywhere!
