11 month old baby coughing at night

My 11 month son had at a cough since he had hand foot and month in October. I've being to the doctors and A&E a couple of times regarding this. He has a brown inhaler twice a day.
A couple of hours after he goes to bed he wakes up coughing to the point he sounds like he is going to be sick. The cough sounds like he is trying to cough up mucus but can't.
I took him back to the doctors and they just turned around to me and said that there isn't anything they can give. His chest is clear so We have to persevere with him and continue the inhaler. If no improvements by next appointment we are being referred to a specialist.
I feel like I'm going round in circles. GP saying one this and A&E doctors saying another. I hate him suffering like this.

Has anyone else gone through this?

Yep. My ds (2) has had this since about 11 months, when he got his first cold. The cough took forever to go. He was quickly referred but the conclusion was, as he’s young his airways are tiny and still maturing so some kids just have trouble clearing the mucus. He’d regularly vomit from choking on it yet otherwise be fine.
He’s just had pneominia though but he was obviously really poorly. Bloomin cough back again, clear chest....so frustrating. He’ll have such sore tummy muscles from all the coughing, but we’re hoping for the six pack to accompany it!

Have you tried propping the head of the cot up a little? And maybe a bit of menthol?

Same here with DS and also my niece. Blue inhaler sorted it, early sign of asthma we were told. But spent lots and lots of time trying to persuade different gps, ending up seeing a private paediatrician when he got ill abroad visiting dh family to finally get it sorted. Grew out of it by 2.5 yrs

Had this with my daughter for about a year before she went on the brown inhaler, which sorted it.

Have you thought about allergens? Dust or mites? Try an antihistamine and see if that helps?
