Low temperature on Amoxicillin

Hi. Just like in the title. My LO (19mths) has been diagnosed with chest infection so he got antibiotics prescribed - amoxicillin. This is a third time he's taking them and a third time the same pattern happens: as soon as he takes the first dose, his temperature drops really low (around 35C). He's acting fine otherwise just the low temp. I've asked the doctors and they said amoxicillin doesn't make the temperature to go down so it can't be because of that. Well, it clearly is because it can't be a coincidence that it happens each time he's on it. Has anyone experienced that? Everytime it happens I worry he could go into a hypothermia or something...

I’ve just found this thread (years later). My 8 month old baby had tonsillitis last week and was prescribed antibiotics (penicillin) 4 times a day for a week. He had a burning fever prior to the antibiotics so we were checking his temp routinely. On night 2 of the antibiotics, his temp dropped to 34 degrees. 111 sent an ambulance immediately and the ambulance crew got the same reading of 34 and rushed us to hospital. When we got to hospital and finally saw a doctor (4 hrs later) his temp had gone back up to 36 so we were discharged. I asked if the penicillin could have caused the low temperature but the doctor was very quick to shut that down as a possibility. I’ve just googled which brought me to this thread and also found the 2018 case study suggesting that penicillin can cause hyperthermia (this study of course won’t have existed when OP posted). My baby wasn’t taking paracetamol or ibuprofen on the day his temp dropped because he had improved hugely from 24 hrs on the antibiotics and didn’t appear to be on pain anymore so there was no other medication given. There must be a correlation between the drop in temp following a dose of the antibiotic. It’s reassuring to read other peoples stories so thanks for sharing!

I know this is an old thread but so glad I found it! We have just come back from abroad and my DD (12 months) had an ear infection. GP prescribed her Amoxicillin for 5 days. Prior to giving the antibiotics she had a constant fever of 38.5ish that I was managing with calpol. After starting the antibiotics her temperature would drop to 35.1 and her hands and feet, chest and back would be cold to touch. My baby runs quite warm usually so this was odd. I called 111 and they said to go to A&E (they were probably thinking sepsis). When I got there her temperature had come up to 36.2. She has been unwell but had been getting through it. Nothing to make me worry. When I asked the doctor if it could be the amoxicillin she said not at all and shut that down quite quickly! I am allergic to penicillin (get hives), not that its related, but I am seriously considering it could be an adverse reaction. Thank you for this thread, as I have been losing my mind trying to find out what's wrong with her!
