Hi all I'm not expecting anyone to have the answers on here as the doctors cant even give us an answer but my 15 year old old has upper left quadrant pain (just under left rib) its hurts to move, breath, laugh, cough, burp even walking hes had an ultrasound, xray, bloods, water sample all clear. Been sent home today and told to take ibuprofen, paracetamol and codeine alternate every 4-6hrs which we've done for last 4 days but it doesnt help with the pain has anyone else's child experienced this? Thanks

Hi. Haven't had a child with this but I have experienced a lot of discomfort on and off under my left rib and all tests were normal. It seems for me it is trapped wind and I can actually hear it squelching when I move my abdomen in and out, it's very weird. It's related to air in the splenic flexure and there is a condition called splenic flexure syndrome. Not sure how common it is on children. Does he get bloated/constipated at all?

When I had something similar (does it hurt when he coughs?) I had pleurisy.

ChipInTheSugar · 24/10/2018 16:19

How about costochondritis (sp.!) ?

Zaksamuel3 · 24/10/2018 16:45

They ruled that out bloods and xrays and scans all fine x

The costochongratis was their first thought but his chest isn't hurting any longer. He's been back in school today and cone home due to pain I don't know what to? This could b muscular in which case could take weeks to heal thank god its half term thus wk.

I had the same as @barbarianmum. It was really very painful and it felt like someone was pinging my lungs like a guitar string! I was prescribed strong painkillers.

Iv go chostochondritis and it doesn’t always effect the central chest region for me. Often, I have it at the base of my ribs, mainly on the left. I know it’s this because if I touch my ribs, it’s excruciating!! Pain relief and time. That’s all that can help. Hope he feels better soon

They put on his discharge note skeletalmuscular but none of the symptoms match with his symptoms esp pain. He is in constant pain worse when he's coughing breathing moving etc cant get any pain relief with meds

It really does sound like chostochondritis. Because when you move, the muscles move and therefore hurt. Also worse when cough etc as it involves rib cage. If I move my arms up together or move quickly, I get a horrid spasm in my rib cage. It’s sickening pain. Horrid. Normal pain meds don’t help me either

I know it's not helpful but it does sound a bit like trapped wind??? Worth giving him a peppermint tea or peppermint capsules from Holland and barratt. They're herbal so won't do any harm. Hope you get it sorted soon x

I have IBS so suffer terrible trapped wind but I've never had it for 7 days continuous pain he had some windsettlers other day as just though I'd try it but no good. His ribs arnt painful at all they first thought it was that but they ruled chostochondritis out in end. Thanks for your replys its appreciated x
