My Dd doesn't drink any water at school

My DD has just started reception. Although still in the settling in period but she just doesn't drink any water throughout the day at all.

I requested the teacher to remind her a few times but they said they remind all the children in general.

I have even put juice with her lunch but she won't even have it.

She doesn't like milk in the morning and just has one sip before going to school. This certainly in not enough.

Please guide what should i do.

Does she take a water bottle into school, maybe try making it fun and adding stickers at certain points up the bottle and get her to drink down to one towards the top then increase it to a lower one over time.
You could then give stickers each day depending on which level she drinks too with a reward of some kind at the end of the week.
I doubt at this age she would think about tipping any away to make it look like she's drunk it.
Would the teacher be up for monitoring it at least in the first week or so?

How come she is only having one sip in the morning before school?

Starlight345 · 01/10/2018 22:51

Is there a general issue about drinking as she only has a sip in the morning? It may well be worth asking in office for midday supervisors to keep an eye.

Chocolatecake12 · 01/10/2018 22:56

Will she drink another drink in the morning rather than milk?
Could she have cut up fruit pieces in her lunch to help with thirst? Grapes? Orange segments etc

Awwsome · 02/10/2018 09:41

In the morning she takes a while to get out of the bed even if she has been awake for a while.

She doesn't like to drink much water or anything else either until a few hits later.

Even throughout the day i need to remind her constantly to drink water otherwise she forgets.

I try to offer her juice but she says no to everything.

I think you need to try and get a good drink down her before she goes to school.

Sirzy · 02/10/2018 09:43

You need to focus on getting more in at home then.

In the nicest possible way if you can’t force it in 1-1 then school with all the other children won’t be able to!

If you DD doesn't enjoy drinking milk in the mornings, would she drink something else? Water or fruit juice? Does she have milk on cereal?

I usually think we fuss far too much about how much children drink, but if she really is going from bedtime the night before until after school on one sip of milk that sounds extreme.

Does she drink well in the evenings? At weekends?

If it's just school days, it might be that she's feeling anxious/under pressure and wants to be in control of something. Maybe better to take the pressure off for a while and not mention it.

Provide foods with a high water content at breakfast and lunch (berries, cucumber, tomato, soup, yogurt etc.). My DC love eating ice cubes for some reason. A fruit juice ice lolly after dinner each night might help?

Awwsome · 02/10/2018 09:45

Although she takes a water bottle it comes back full. When I ask her why didn't drink she says i don't know.

I have put sticker on it today lets see how it works.

I have given her some grapes and yogurt too with her lunch.

I hope its a phase and will soon shall pass.

does she eat fruit?
Yogurt?
Milk in cereal?
Soups?
salad veggies etc?

BiscuitDrama · 02/10/2018 10:51

Will she eat a massive chunk of cucumber?

Starlight345 · 02/10/2018 11:55

My son isn’t a great drinker so he has a drink with each meal.

I think you are giving her far too much control. At reception age up when you say. If she needs 10 minutes to come round wake her up 10 minutes early .
Breakfast a cup of fluids. Do you want juice or water( whatever she will drink ) if it is a battle then find a way to motivate sticker chart for cup of .. for breakfast , sticker for drinking 1/2 her water at school.

If you can’t get her to drink though how can you expect the school to ?

MrsPeytonJones · 02/10/2018 18:26

Does she know that if she drinks she will need to wee? Does she use the school toilets?

SoyDora · 02/10/2018 18:30

Mine doesn’t drink at school either (also just started reception). I think she’s just too preoccupied.
She does however have a big drink in the morning, a big drink as soon as she comes out and I know she eats a lot of fruit/veg at school so I’m not too worried.
Agree though, if you struggle to get her to drink enough, how do you think her teacher (with 20+ other children to look after) will manage it?

viques · 02/10/2018 19:08

Have you checked that she can open her water bottle herself? Some are easier than others.

Awwsome · 02/10/2018 19:42

Sorry readers if i miswrote the post. She is more so reluctant to drink in the morning and needs to be reminded during the day. If reminded she will definitely drink. But with so many activities and new things at school she tends to not remember to have her water

Yes she knows how to open her bottle and she does use the school toilets.
