Hand foot and mouth and swimming

DS (21 months) is in late stages of hand foot and mouth. Spots are quietening down but still there. We are flying on holiday tomorrow and hopefully in a couple of days he will be completely fine (I am told it runs its course in a week more or less and it's going to be a week this weekend).

However would it be safe to go swimming in the sea before the blisters are completely gone? We wouldn't go in a pool as I know it's contagious but I think the sea is different. Also apart from giving it to others, is it safe for him, in terms of exposure and infections? I saw our GP his morning to double check things before flying and stupidly forgot to ask this one detail.. has anybody experienced this?
