14 yo DD is currently receiving orthodontic treatment at Guys hospital in London. I've received this letter today but I'm not sure what all the fancy jargon means. I'm worried in case I've missed something.

It says: X presents with a class 2 division 1 incisor relationship on a class 2 skeletal based with reduced vertical proportions. Her malocclusion is complicated by an increased overjet of 10 mm and diminutive upper lateral incisors.

It goes on to say that she has been treated with twin block braces, is currently on top and bottom fixed appliances and then it goes on to talk about retainers.

I don't understand this bit either:
Retention: (upper binder retainer UR2-UL2; upper and lower vacuum formed retainers).

I know it's to do with retainers following the fixed braces but does it mean one will be fixed and the other removable?

Any help would be great! Thank you Smile

I'm a speech therapist in training and we get a bit about dental things. Basically, she has a lager than usual overbite and small upper teeth. The retainer bit I'm not sure on. Does that help?

Long time ago since Ive been a dental nurse but the retainer bit means she will have a fixed retainer on the top 4 teeth (the 4 incisors basically)> they are usually at the back of the teeth so you can't see them and a lower removable one.

Class 2 skeletal = upper jaw forward of lower jaw
Class 2 division 1 -= Upper front teeth fat forward of lower front teeth
Overjet 10mm - that’s how far the uppers stick out. 10mm is big
Diminutive lateral incisors- the upper 2s are peg shaped- ie small and conical
Retention- there will be a wire and glue holding the upper front teeth in place.
She will also have to wear removeable plastic retainers as well, both upper and lower.

Far not fat!

Yes the upper fixed retainer will be glued on the palate side so not visible.

@Chrisinthemorning thank you for such a detailed response.
