So my DS has kept us up all night screaming. Won't settle without alot of tears and holding his hand. Weve been going through gradual retreat sleep training which was working brilliantly so I have tried to minimise picking him uo. He has been teething lately too. Tried ibroprofen and it did nothing nor did teething powders. Nursed him 4 times in the night in case he was hungry which he took but not long feeds but he is coughing a little and i could hear his nose crackling as he fed.

Now we are up hes playing

Is he ill or just being a pain because He doesnt want to sleep alone? Anything I can help to ease his nose??

Saline spray/drops should help his wee nose. I don’t imagine he’s ‘playing up’ at 6mo tbh, things should get back to normal when he’s feeling better.
The tiredness sucks, stay strong

I’m sure you know deep down that 6 month old babies do not “play up” like that.... maybe his blocked up nose was making it difficult to sleep - I know it happens to me. His only option is to cry as he can’t tell you.

Jellybabie3 · 25/04/2018 06:49

Ok will try the drops thanks. I dont mean to sound mean, I think I should've said 'is he resisting the sleep training' as opposed to playing up.

So difficult when it all slams you at the same time

He's got a cold coming and is 6 months old so no, he isn't resisiting you pr playing up. Its hard to breathe lying down with a cold. I'd try and get him to nap in a bouncer etc so he's tilted upwards plus tbe recommendations above. You can get plug ins etc but check the ages

WhatwouldRuthdo · 25/04/2018 06:53

He’s 6 months old, he’s not ‘playing up’. Even for grown ups, cough and cold symptoms are always worse at night. Saline spray as has been suggested and you could try child’s olbas oil or the vapour plug ins. Raising the head of his cot slightly may help too. Hope he’s on the mend soon.

I find a humidifier really helps at night when our DC has a cold / bunged up nose

Hope you manage some rest today OP

lornathewizzard · 25/04/2018 08:14

Oh yes we use a humidifier too

Jellybabie3 · 25/04/2018 08:28

Thank you i have just looked at the drops and himidifier online so will pop out in a bit. Fingers crossed

Question though- hes just self settled for a nap? He wouldnt do that for love nor money last night and as I say he woke every 30min hysterical unless i shushed/cuddled or held his hands (or all 3). Can there be that much difference between night and day?

Try the calpol plug in to help clear his nose at night, I still use one when my kids have colds and my dc are teens Blush it does work though!

SoyDora · 25/04/2018 08:31

Yes there can.

Bananarama12 · 25/04/2018 08:31

Jellybabie you post a lot about sleep. I hope you can relax and enjoy baby instead of over thinking everything.

Jellybabie3 · 25/04/2018 08:44

I do enjoy my baby.

Thanks. I will try the drops. Horrible hearing his nose blocked and crackly whilst feeding Sad.

@Bananarama12 just to say I understand what you are saying, but, my HV advised me to sleep train using gradual retreat which has worked well and with no tears. Teething has started which has hit him hard. Her advice was not to stop the training and 'give in' because of teething or minor colds as he will learn he can cry play up. I am a ftm working it all out so am taking peoples advise. Of course I cuddle him, love him, play with him. But he does need to sleep and he isnt. Even with my 'help' he was waking every hour at night, 30min naps in the day since christmas and ends up very very tired. He still only has 30min naps. Like I said things have improved and I appreciate there are curve balls like teething but colds I havent really experienced (minue aches after jabs) so I only wanted some advice from experienced mums.

30 minute naps are normal.

rolls eyes

Seriously . His a baby. They have good sleep and crap sleep .

bettydraper31 · 26/04/2018 19:19

What you have said sounds completely normal. Just don’t be too hard on yourself or expect too much. It WILL improve, just take it day by day (or night by night). My DD used to sleep for 20 minutes, used to drive me crazy! Good luck Op x
