Tell me about your experience with grommets if your child has had them

It’s looking likely that DS3 will need to be fitted with grommets after numerous ear infections and perforated ear drums.

How did you find the surgery and recovery? Any complications etc.

Very quick day surgery. Took ds out of the hospital into the car park and he looked amazed and pointed at the cars going past: we think that before grommets he had no idea they made a sound. He was also stopped in his tracks by birdsong later that day. The results were amazing and he was a little groggy for a day but nothing lasting.

My son has had grommets put it once and ear surgery to examine his ear drum on another occasion. The surgery was very straightforward. It was under a general anaesthetic but he was home the same day. He was slightly groggy afterwards. It made a big difference to his hearing on both occasions. He's going to have surgery to repair his ear drum as it has a hole in it soon?

Thanks Korg. Lovely to hear that your DS has had fantastic results.

DS’ hearing has definitely worsened since having all these ear infections.

My dsd (3) had them before last Xmas.
She still gets horrible ear infections which leak discharge from her ears. Also had her adenoids removed... she still has issues with a runny painful nose.

My Dd has grommet surgery twice, the second time with adenoids removed. Both times under general anaesthetic as a day case, very quick and back to normal the following day with just the grommets, when she had grommets and adenoids removal it took her a couple more days to recover.

My son had grommet surgerey when he was 4 . The procedure was unremarkable from start to finish but the dramatic differences in his hearing was amazing, even on the drive home from the hospital. He had them renewed ( i thjnk they’d fallen out) about a year later and his tonsils removed at the same time.
The main worry for me was the 2 ga’s but he was absolute fine and well
Looked after. It was me who was a bag of nerves

DS had adenoids and grommets at 4.5 - he was in tears in the car on the way home as it was "so noisy" - he'd already eaten his lunch and mine after surgery and was absolutely fine the next day. He did have a couple of ear infections afterwards - which was nothing compared to the usual amount. Both grommets dropped out but one ear didn't heal, so we went back at 9yo for an eardrum repair - again completely unremarkable and hearing normal after that.
