9m old always sounds like he needs to clear his throat

That's the best way I can describe it! Is this something to see the doctor about? He always sounds like he needs to do a good cough, I hope you know what I mean. He's been like this since he was born but I just put it down to having an immature respiratory system and being a snuffly baby, he's also had a lot of colds in between (pre school toddler sibling) but he's 9m now and it doesn't seem to be going away. He also drools a LOT and whilst he is incredibly happy and chilled during the day, he sleeps terribly at night so I'm wondering if the two are related.

Sounds like it could be his adenoids. I'd take him to gp and have the "rattle" of phlegm listened to in case its a slight chest infection but I'd also mention to Doctor his constant congestion. My son is waiting to have his adenoids removed for the same symptoms (and recurrent ear infections due to the constant congestion) but he's 3 years old. Also drooling is a symptom of inflamed adenoids however at his age it would probably be attributed to teething by a gp. Does he grunt/hold breath/snort during sleep? As that's another big sign for adenoid issues.

Thanks so much for replying, it sounds like it could very well be his adenoids then, I will go to gp, yes I thought it was just teething drool but he goes through a dribble bib every half hour or so! And he has no teeth yet .

Fingers crossed the gp is a good listener. When I went armed with a "I think my son needs his adenoids out" attitude I thought I was going to be rebuffed but as soon as I described all the symptoms it actually the gp who suggested it before I got to it, I was so grateful! My DB was a very sniffy type baby and toddler and forever had chest infections, coughs and colds etc and was diagnosed with asthma when about five. He always used to do a little uhuh uhuh (sorry hard to put in words but almost like a put on cough)after running etc even when bug free and l honestly thought it was just a mannerism he'd developed. But no he had asthma. He grew out of it in adulthood thankfully.

Consider a bit of reflux; the acid can cause that throat-clear cough and it would exp,ain not sleeping too well if he is flat. Maybe prop top end of cot up a bit?

Thanks everyone, gp said his symptoms did sound adenoidy but she couldn't refer him unless there was more evidence.

However she checked his ears and he does have an ear infection so have antibiotics for that. I'm still convinced he might need help with his adenoids, my husband had his out and grommets for glue ear so maybe it is hereditary, but anyway time will tell but hopefully the antibiotics will help clear the infection at least, poor boy! I hope he hasn't had it for long! He's been so bright during the day I never suspected! I feel bad!

That's great, I would keep a diary if you can of his congestion (in between normal colds) and if he does snort/grunt in sleep try to record it on ur phone once or twice and then if symptoms persist go bk to the gp in 3 months time and say you were told they needed more evidence for a referral so here it is... Ta-da! I hope the antibiotics kick the ear infection bless him xx
