Your experiences of discovering you child is missing adult teeth

First appointment at orthodontist for DS1 (11) today after being referred from dentist - who had previously x-rayed the bottom front teeth as there was still one baby tooth left and the two middle adult were missing. So far so mildly bad.

Anyway orthodontist x-rated whole mouth and he has seven adult teeth missing! (Two sets of back molars, two bottom middle and one top middle-ish.). He will have to go to the clinic at the hospital for specialist treatment.

Apart from being shocked he got to 11 and we didn’t know this (he’s been going to the dentist!) I’m now worried about the whole thing.

Wondering what will happen with the missing ones - assuming quite drastic braces Alec but any experiences of length of treatment and long term implications - will they do implants or move teeth around.

Are you including the 4 wisdom teeth in the absent 7 permanent teeth?

My 9yr old child has missing baby teeth. The dentist mentions them every time we visit. She's waiting to see if adult teeth appear, but I don't think they will. She has a big gap in her front teeth and to the side. I don't know what the treatment would be.

two missing molars here - surgery to remove the sinking baby teeth, followed by four and a half years of braces (and counting) to move teeth around. Partly that's due to mess-ups by the hospital, partly due to us not wanting implants (because of a medical condition) and dentist saying NO to bridges. Maybe another year of braces still to go .

If we'd been able to have implants, the whole process would have been a lot more straightforward (and quicker).

I’m not including the wisdom teeth in the seven - I used that as a positive upshot to cheer DS up (told him tales of impacted wisdom teeth and abcessesas a consolation that he doesn’t have to worry about that...) . It’s both sets of back molars, two bottom front middle and one in the top front :-(

I have this, still have a couple of my baby teeth at the age of 41, my treatment was braces, bridges and building up of small teeth, my eldest was referred to the Orthodontist last year when she was 12 and she has the same, we had a 3D scan last week and models will be made of her mouth, things have moved on a bit since my time! Then they will make a decision but most likely a similar treatment, we are looking at around 4 years of treatment, she's under a teaching hospital in London the same one I was treated at and they are fantastic, the treatment is lengthy but worthwhile.

Once they are adults they can look at more permanent solutions such as implants.

DD has 6 missing adult teeth not including wisdom teeth. We waited about 8 months from seeing the general orthodontist to getting an appointment at the hospital.

The orthodontist at the hospital was so reassuring and came up with a plan which involves taking some baby teeth out, a brace to move other teeth around a bit to make room eventually for either bridges (on NHS) or implants (not on NHS).

We seem to be there a lot for regular appointments and brace fixing but hopefully it will all be worth it.

I'd never heard of this until DD had her x-ray and I was quite shocked when I was told but the hospital have been brilliant. To them 6 missing teeth isn't that strange so I found that reassuring!

We will probably be at Kings.

We're at The Royal London and yes it is lifelong treatment as bridges will need replacing however the bridges I had at 17 I still have in.

I had 8 adult teeth missing, all on the top. They lasted into my 20s and then I had a combination of implants and bridges when they started to look wobbly. It was done on the NHS as it was deemed to be necessary and not cosmetic. It was quite a lengthy and unpleasant process, but it was 20 years ago; I imagine treatment has come a long way since then!

OP I miss 4 adult teeth, all molars (two up two down).

By the time I was 20ish my baby teeth fell off/ started to get damaged and I had to get 4 implants. I did the upper two first, and the lower set a couple of years later. I haven't had any issues since then, in fact I sometimes forget I have 4 implants.

I'm missing 4 adult teeth. Two baby teeth lasted until my 30s. When they fell out, I didn't do anything to fill the gaps. As a result, other teeth moved and I now don't really have enough space for implants. One option is to get braces to open up the gaps again. But I am old and realistically I won't do this.

I am missing my lower wisdom teeth and have my lower Es still as the adult 5s are not present. So that's 4 missing. My DH has a missing upper lateral incisor on one side and a peg on the other side, so sort of 2 missing.

Our 4 DC have 4 different combinations of our missing teeth. DS1 pretty much has what I've got. DS2 has all his top teeth but has my missing 5 and 8 on one side for the lower set. DS3 has the full set.

DD is the most complicated. Luckily she has the full bottom set inherited from DH although they are shaped like mine. But she has his upper set too which has caused complications as she had an impacted canine which needed help to bring down. It was also noticed that she has the peg incisor like DH but has managed to keep the baby incisor on the other side where no adult one is present.

It is likely she will need implants for those two incisors in due course.
