4 year old with possible scoliosis?

We went to the gp about 3 weeks ago because my 4 year old had a lump on his chest. Saw the paediatrician today who thinks it might be scoliosis and sent him for a chest x ray there and then. We get the results on Wednesday. Does anyone have any experience of this? I thought it was something teenagers got. He has various other health issues as well, including hyper mobility and global development delay.

It might be worth researching into Marfan syndrome. It's not very easy to diagnose.

Thankyou. I don't think he has marfan syndrome as he is short and stocky. He has also had genetic testing done which should have picked up marfan syndrome if he had it.

is he using a scooter a lot?
and if yes, does he change feet?
dc had scoliosis at that age, and those were the first questions by the consultant.

(dc is fine now, we were given exercises for core strength and had a couple of yearly follow ups)

Have you done the bending over test?

Ellie is the lump on his ribcage? Near the sternum bit?
My ds also has a small pea sized lump there. He also has 1 shoulder blade lower than the other and a slight shoulder drop. He's 13 now. It's not scoliosis but muscular caused by his spasticity and weak core.

Like your boy he has various difficulties and no one can explain some of them. The lump is obvious but doesn't cause and hasn't caused any issues. He's also not deteriorated - iyswim?

No bending over test, paediatrician tried but ds wouldn't comply. @youarenotkiddingme my ds's lump is in the same place as yours but bigger, more like plum or apricot size.

does he change feet?

I've never known a child change feet on the scooter. Dd2 had to use her non-preferred foot as she's only got one hand and the balance was off, but none of mine ever changed feet when scooting.

brownelephant, Can I ask where your dc’s curve was and what degree it was? How long did they need to do the exercises for? My son has a less than 10 degree curve in his lumbar spine and has a range of exercises to do.

I myself have scoliosis and so obviously I’m concerned that it is ‘true’ scoliosis rather than a positional curve so I was really interested and somewhat relieved to see your post.

Just thought I'd update to say that ds hasn't got scoliosis. One of his ribs is growing at a slightly odd angle and the lump is the end of one of his ribs that is meant to be attached to his sternum. It shouldn't cause him any trouble.

dontsay if irrc it was about 15degrees just under shoulder blades.
we did exercises for about 6 months, and general fitness for core strength like monkey bars. and we got a balance bike instead of a scooter.

Ds definitely doesn't have scoliosis either (confirmed Monday). Looks like he'll get a dx if mild cp though.
