3 year old with sticky eyes - how best to clean?

My son has had a cold for several days and now has sticky eyes. the discharge is clear/green so I don't think he has an infection ([harmacist has a look when I went in for cough mixture and he says not also) but poor love is waking up with eyelashes stuck together.

I'm using cotton wool pads and water to clean them at the moment. Is there anything better?

That's the best thing - just warm water and separate pad for each eye. You could use filtered water if you're in a hard water area

Meant to say, I'm using cooled boiled water and a new cotton wool pad each time.
