Adenoids and holding breath / not breathing?

My little twin has a rough start - he was in nicu until he was 8 weeks old, seemed like he had a cold when he came home but was quickly readmitted with whooping cough. His breathing still wasn't right when he left and was always very laboured and noisy. Eventually they diagnosed him with enlarged adenoids. We did a home sleep study which was inconclusive but his breathing is so much better than it used to be.

He's now 16 months old and recently he's been doing something really strange - it's almost like he forgets how to breathe, doesn't breathe for 10 seconds or so, and then starts gasping and panting. These episodes go on for 10-15 mins at a time and then he's fine.

We aren't due to see the ent again until May and the GP isn't sure what it is - has anyone experienced this? Is it related to the adenoids or a separate issue?

Yes yes sounds like adenoids - you need to see someone before May. Ask your gp for an urgent referral or ask your ent to move appointment forward.
Try and record it on video if you can
My lo had her adenoids out at 13 months - it has transformed her and our life.

Thanks - I was afraid of that :-/

It's strange because he used to sound like a warthog 24/7 but now he mostly seems fine until he starts doing this, then is fine again afterwards. I'll ask the GP if they can contact his ENT to bring it forwards.

is this while they’re awake or just asleep?

Is it when he’s asleep? If so it sounds like sleep apnoea.
