Suspected Milk Protein Intolerance (2 lots of prescribed milk) no improvement.

6 week old DS has been constipated since changing from Aptimal ready made (used in hospital) to powder.

Been to Paediatrician who prescribed Nutrimigen and then Neocate. He has been on both these milks for a week each. Still no improvement and having to use glycerin suppository to make him go (all prescribed by Paed)

What next? At the time thought it was a sledgehammer to crack a walnut. We're back next week but have googled and now concerned was hoping it was simple constipation but not so sure.

They've ruled out Hirsprungs as before the changed to powdered milk he was opening his bowels fine

Change over to Aptimal ready made to Aptimal powder was 8 days old btw

I’m no expert but I was always told babies milk should be changed as little as possible.

My youngest had lactose and protein intolerance.. she had really bad tummy cramping, screamed a lot, sick a lot diarrhoea a lot but also constipation at times. After 9 months of been told “there bowels are the last thing to develop properly” (this drove me crazy) she had tests then I was advised only after this to change her milk to soya milk. She had eczema from that so she now has oat milk. Can you phone the health visitor for more advise or ask to be referred to dietician?

She was a lot older than your little one and I wouldn’t advise changing milk again without consulting a professional.

Does he have any other symptoms like my little one did? X

Hi, we went through this exact same thing, by the time we got to neocate our Ds stomach lining was quite damaged and he had bad silent reflux so he also needed omeprazole, you may need to persevere for a week or two with neocate to see any improvement but it depends what the symptoms are. If it's any comfort once we had the right diagnosis he started to thrive after a month or two and is now a healthy 5 year old. It is important to get to the right milk in the case of an allergy, the usual advice to persevere doesn't work but neocate is (or was) the ultinate solution if the milk is a problem.

Thanks for responding the milk changes have been prescribed by the consultant paediatrician. I was shocked as thought it was simple constipation and needed lactulose or something to solve but GP couldn’t do as he was less than 4 WO. (He had NO other symptoms). He was being sick from straining not reflux.

I’d call docs on Monday or Health visitor and see if they can refer you to a dietician. They are the experts with food etc sounds like he’s reacting to something else now too if eczema is coming out. It’s a mind field and a lot of tests don’t show intolerance or allergies. We new my little one was intolerant due to symptoms started to ease off 😀

That's what my worry is as despite having the prescribed milk he's still not sorted if anything got worse. They say that neocate as its amino acid based is the most gentlest of food for infants. So if he's not got a food allergy it must be something physiological which is concerning 😦. Was hoping for others to have had similar. Finger crosse another week of neocate improves things before we go back to paediatrician
