Baby has green poo after starting vitamin drops

emjellis1991 · 23/09/2017 13:16

My baby is 2 weeks and 5 days old

I started her on vitamin drops on the 20th September

Since she started them her poo has gone from yellow to green and she seems to cry out in pain randomly.

I changed her today and she pooped again 4 times in a row which I had to catch in baby wipes (sorry TMI)

I can't see it being the milk as she has been on it since birth and has had no issues until the drops started.

I don't know who to ring the health visitor doesn't work weekends and the midwife has discharged me now. She also isn't yet registered at the doctors I'm going Monday to register her. HELP !!!

If they are formula fed I didnt think they needed extra vitamins until 6 months old

dementedpixie · 23/09/2017 13:41

What vitamins are they?

NapQueen · 23/09/2017 13:45

Are they blackcurrant flavour by any chance?

Any time ds has anything with blackcurrant flavouring he gets lime green poops.

Applesandpears56 · 23/09/2017 13:54

You don't need to give vitamins if they are formula fed as the formula already has vitamins added. Maybe just stop the drops until she's 6 months.

emjellis1991 · 25/09/2017 12:19

Thank you everyone they are the NHS multi vitamins and have banana flavour in them. The health visitor said that they should have them 4 weeks on but that she needed to start them now.

I thought the same with her being on formula

She still has green poo and is also crying out in pain randomly.

Rang the health visitor and she said it's colic but I can't see it being that.

I think the green is caused by the iron. I mean, I know that iron in vitamins causes green poo, but don't want to diagnose your DD.

ohnowhatcanido · 25/09/2017 12:24

She definitely doesn't need them. Especially as she's on formula. Check with your GP if you are unsure, but I think you were given incorrect advice.

The green poo could be related, it could also be colic. I'd stop the vitamins and see if things improve.

If not then perhaps look at the formula she is on? You can get comfort milks which can be easier to digest for some babies is she crying and wriggling around an awful lot? Even if she's been on the same.milk since birth, it could be that the effects of it are just kicking in now that she's a little older. My sons reflux started about 3 weeks old and we changed his milk to great effect.

www.nhs.uk/Conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/Pages/vitamins-for-children.aspx says from birth from breast fed but 6 months for formula fed

What milk is she having?

ineedwine99 · 25/09/2017 12:26

I only started my baby on vitamins at 12m old when she switched to cows milk, i thought while on formula she got all she needed from that?

dementedpixie · 25/09/2017 12:26

The vitamins don't contain iron... just vitamins A, C and D

dementedpixie · 25/09/2017 12:28

Should have clarified - formula fed only need it after 6 months if taking less than 500mls

emjellis1991 · 25/09/2017 19:23

She is on sma comfort milk and I rang the health visitor today and she said it sounds like colic we have been using infacol today with every feed as she can't have gripe water yet so will see how that goes. She is crying in pain and clenching her fists and going bright red. When she has a poo it's once every two days and she fills about 4 nappies in a row

Comfort can cause green poo itself so could be the formula

ohnowhatcanido · 25/09/2017 19:34

Yes, perhaps try the regular SMA? It does sound a bit like colic though.

emjellis1991 · 25/09/2017 19:36

She was on regular sma for a week and kept projectile vomiting as soon as we switched to comfort she was fine we tried anti reflux too and she is fine on that one as well.

I just hope she gets better soon as I hate seeing her in pain.

My ds had horrible green poo on comfort milk, I think it's normal.

emjellis1991 · 25/09/2017 23:32

Ok thank you I'm going to stop the vitamin drops until she is 6 months as the NHS website advises, I hope the infacol works and that it is colic

Do the vitamins have iron? I bf my baby but when I started taking bf supplements my lo was crying all the time and had green poo, turned out the iron in the vitamins as causing havoc! Google it!

emjellis1991 · 26/09/2017 00:54

No they don't have iron in that's what I don't understand or that would make sense. All I can think is it must be colic she screams in pain and her tummy is swollen as soon as I give her a bit of infacol she stops crying and calms down
