Low iron stores or anaemic child?

My 4 year old DS had a blood test recently for an illness which has since resolved.

A couple of days later I received a phone call from the GP saying his haemoglobin was low but normal range at 11.7 but his iron stores are low at 10.

He was given iron meds (ferrous fumerate) it made his tummy feel awful. I've changed his diet to include a good source of iron at every meal and got a childs vitamin with iron to help too .

Anyone else had an anaemic child? Is there any other iron supplement he can take?

I would want to find out why anemic? At his age there may be an underlying condition

Spartone is an iron supplement that is much easier on the stomach.

My daughter is on iron liquid
We tried ferrous fumerate but she couldn't tolerate it. Now she is on one called Sytron liquid
No reason found yet but they are wondering if she has mild ADHD

Thanks all.

apples investigations are ongoing about the low iron but I agree the cause needs to be found. Doctors think it's more than likely dietary though he takes low dose of aspirin every day so it may be that which is irritating his tummy (as I understand it though this is unlikely - but having googled I don't understand why it's being dismissed as unlikely as apparently aspirin causes low iron in adults so why not the same in children??).

dizzy same issue he can't seem to tolerate ferrous fumerate. I'll ask the GP about sytron. Can I ask how often they get their iron levels retested?

Thanks mono I'll look into spatone too.
