Two year old complaining of a bad smell. Someone help please

My two year old daughter for the last two weeks or so has been holding her nose and saying "what's that smell, yuck". At first I didn't worry over it and now though she is doing it several times a day and sometimes she runs away when it happens and is in tears because the smell is apparently yucky. There is no smell that anyone else can smell and no dirty nappy etc. I'm at a loss.
The last week she has been very tearful and upset over the tiniest thing and just doesn't seem herself at all. These two things may not be related but I am struggling now with her terrible mood.
I was wondering if it's possible that she put something up her nose that is lodged? Maybe a bit of food or something. And it's maybe annoying her? No fevers etc. Any advice appreciated!

Sniff her nose?

Madbum · 12/06/2017 19:48

Sinus infections can sometimes do that, has she had a cold recently?

TheInimitableMrsFanshawe · 12/06/2017 19:58

It's entirely possible she has shoved something up there. Trip to the GP in order, anyway.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 12/06/2017 19:58

Is there a possibility, that she has something wedged up her nose, and it has become infected.
I would pop her along to the GP/clinic/walk in centre, just to be sure.

I've read many a thread where a MNer has been complaining that their child smells weird, and it's always because they have something shoved up their nose.

This sounds mad, but have you tried sniffing your DD near her nostrils to see if you can smell something yourself?

MinkowskisButterfly · 12/06/2017 20:02

I agree with the others, sounds like she may have shoved something up her nose! Best get her checked at the GP or walk in centre if you have on nearby?

abc12345 · 12/06/2017 20:10

Or she might be very sensitive to smells (some people's senses are higher/lower than other peoples)...

Imnotaslimjim · 12/06/2017 20:12

Get her to breath on you, she may have tonsil stones, they smell horrific. Either that or shoved something up her nose.

Twopeapods · 12/06/2017 20:35

Ok had a smell of her breath and nose and there's nothing wrong there. I'm gonna phone for an appointment tomorrow to see if there's something up there.
When I was her age I shoved blue tac up there so maybe she's taken after me Grin
If there is hopefully that's why she has been in a terrible mood. Driving me crazy.

My 5 year old has some sensory issues and she is very sensitive to smells. The cat was had a fur ball next to her once and she was gagging and fetching. Also out and about she will comment on places smelling.

youarenotkiddingme · 12/06/2017 21:11

Sinuses being blocked can cause this. I get awful smells up my nose this time of year caused by hay fever.

Honestly it really is rank and smells like rotting corpses Envy (

yikesanotherbooboo · 15/06/2017 17:15

One of our DC had a bit of foam rubber up his nose for months before we realised and wheedled it out!

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 15/06/2017 18:00

How's your little girl OP ?

Twopeapods · 16/06/2017 22:22

She has an appointment next week with the GP. Our appointments take a while here. She is still complaining of bad smells though! I will come back on and update after she has been seen. Thank you.

How did you get on at the doctor's OP?

Mom12345 · 14/01/2020 03:33

Did you ever find out what this is? My toddler is doing something similar. Thank you.

Ger75 · 03/11/2020 10:28

Hi did you find out what the reason was my 3 year old doing the same

Yolab · 23/11/2020 23:06

Twopeapods I know your post was 2017 but also wondering what the doctor said about your little one saying everything smells bad. I'm sitting with the same thing with my 3 year old.

Nowadays I would suspect covid as well as the above
