any dentists/oral surgeons/people who know about abscesses around?

DD has to have two extractions under GA next week.
She has a recurrent abscess, has just finished antibiotics, on Sunday, but it's already returned. Will they extract them if infected? I called the hospital to ask but they just said sometimes they don't and will decide at pre-admission on Tuesday.
Wondering if I should go back to dentist for more antibiotics?
And any lovely success stories of children having teeth extracted under GA would also be very welcome at the moment please!

Dentist & Do lots of hospital GA lists.

Don't know who you've spoken to at the hospital, but that's utter nonsensical advice! GA is the only failsafe way to extract infected teeth.
If DD isn't in pain / facially swollen, then don't bother with another course of antibiotics.

Don't worry- children bounce back so much quicker than adults..

She'll be grumpy when she first wakes up from the GA, so don't be alarmed-totally normal. They usually settle down v quickly, when paracetamol (oral or IV ) kicks in.

Get some soft foods & paracetamol & ibuprofen ( if medical history permits latter ) in for home.

24 hours rest & recovery afterwards.

It'll be fine- Modern GA is v safe

No she's not in pain, no swelling apart from the lump above her tooth.
She has a wobbly tooth - will they remove that for safety?
It was just the consultant's secretary I spoke to at the hospital.
I have the paracetamol and ibuprofen ready!
Ds has had a couple of medical ops and is just always starving when he wakes up! But he's so laid back and she's so anxious so feels more of a worry!

Yes re wobbly teeth-I always ask & have a feel of all teeth beforehand. But do alert the operating dentist to wobbly teeth pre-op too!

Can't take the risk of pushing a tooth down the airway when the anaesthetic tube is placed. In our hospital, the vast majority of children are tubed after the initial gas induction.

Even slightly wobbly teeth? She has a few! She's almost 8 and has only lost 4 so far..one it's quite wobbly so that's fair enough but she has a few slightly wobbly too :(

Depends on degree of mobility & therefore risk to airway. Operating dentist will know.

So, we went for pre-admission today and the surgeon said the abscess definitely won't stop them extracting the tooth.

What he did say though was that she doesn't appear to have any adult teeth above the two she is having extracted (first upper molars)! She has the rest though, just those two appear to be missing, or maybe hidden?

Really can't see her cooperating on the day - will they still go ahead if she's totally non-cooperative? I'm prepared to hold her down of need be,hate the thought of it but hate the thought of it not being done even more!

How old is DD? If 6 or under possible that the permanent teeth haven't developed & may still does so.
If older, then much more likely that these permanent teeth are congenitally absent.
If you are happy about bear hugging for GA induction, and you can hold your daughter securely, then op should all proceed. We always tell the parents/guardians that our staff absolutely cannot restrain your child; we can lightly "clinically hold" your child alongside your bear-hug but that's about it.
Did you ask about pre-med? Some child GA dental sites offer this, but not all.

She is 8 next month. Has only lost 4 baby teeth so far though.
I will willingly bear hug her if that's what it needs. Can't stand the thought of coming back home without it done.

I did mention pre-med and was told to discuss with the anaesthetist on the morning.

DD had extraction of a milk tooth due to sn abcess under local this year. Emergency in another country. She was absolutely fine. Watched a movie in eye glasses as it was done. Pain went immediately and no anti biotics required

If they have told you to discuss pre-med with anaesthetist, then it sounds like pre-med distinct possibility; so that's a relief.
If your DD has only lost 4 primary teeth to date-(lower anteriors??), she could be slightly behind as re dental development. Try not to worry re possible missing teeth; your general dentist can always x-ray in 12 mths time.

I hope it goes well. DD has sensory issues and was more distressed by the drill than the extraction itself. If she had to do it again we would have used earphones or protectors too

It's all done and she was great!

They didn't remove the wobbly tooth but it fell out in recovery!

@Bleu2 thank you so much for all your help. They wouldn't give a pre-med as the anaesthetist didn't want her to be too sleepy after so he just did a quick gas induction when we got there.
I'm just surprised at the minimal amount of blood, hardly anything, and nothing at all since they took the pads out in recovery. And she hasn't asked for any pain relief at all, she says there is no pain!
But there are not really any roots on the teeth which sounds a little odd to me if there are no permanent teeth above them?! But then I have little knowledge of dentistry!

All sounds good. Chronic Infection eats away at the roots of the baby teeth, so that's probably what's happened.

Yes I was wondering that. Could the infection also be the reason for the permanent teeth not developing above them? But saying that, she was fine at check up just other a year ago, it was last April I noticed a chip in her tooth but at that point it was filled as it hadn't decayed, the abscess on the gum came in October, when the filling fell off.
She just has a huge blister on the inside of her lip today, it was swollen when she came round, they had nicked it with something.
