nearly 3 yr old frequently gagging on food

Is this unusual ? Is it medical or greed? My son is not far off three and recently has been gagging on food to a frightening back slapping extent almost daily. I don't know whether he's simply wolfing food down and forgetting to chew or whether there is a physiological reason and I should get him checked. I guess I'm interested in whether this happens to others.

Have you checked his tonsils in case they are inflamed and blocked the airway?

Just to clarify by gagging I mean food is getting stuck on swallowing so he almost chokes ...rather than gagging because he doesn't like the taste. It's very scary
