Severe UTI in DS 4 year old and doc has me worried

DS went to sleep perfectly happily after a good dinner but woke in the morning with pain urinating, cloudy urine and all the other symptoms of a UTI. Managed to get an appointment and prescription within two hours and antibiotics were started. This was yesterday morning.

We spent the whole night with a shivering boy alternating cal pol, ibuprofen to keep his temperature under control.

My question and it would be so helpful if somewhere here has been through something similar:

  1. Can a UTI get so serious just overnight!?! What symptoms did I miss the day before? Feeling very guilty.
  2. Is it that unusual to have a UTI in a boy. GP indicated that if it were to ever happen again we must see a specialist.
  3. For girls, it's better wiping. What should you be careful about in boys to avoid it happening again. dH says clean under the foreskin....for a 4 year old!?

Sorry for the long post....thanks for reading.....

Ds has had one before too which was successfully treated with antibiotics Don't try to clean under the foreskin as it may not have even detached yet and retracting it could hurt.

Thanks pixie. That was a tough two days getting the fever under control.

Did you ever figure out what could have caused it for your DS?
