My son was sent a letter home by his school saying that they wanted to weigh and measure him and I said yes as I know he is a little fat but not a lot anyway the other day they sent home a letter saying he is 60 kg and 5 feet 1 inch and that is overweight. Know I was surprised so I don't know what to do I saw my 11 year old son naked the other day and he look obese he has giant breasts and about 5 rolls of fat I am realy worried and don't know if this is normal. If your son is 11 how much dose he weigh

If those figures are accurate then I would suggest you make an appointment with the school nurse or GP or someone to discuss things - without your son.

Any rolls of fat on an 11 year old isn't a good sign.

What does he eat?

Shapebandit · 29/01/2016 18:46

That does sound very overweight. My 10.5 year old is average weight for his age and is under 30kg
I would advise to speak to a GP or weight specialist to get an idea of how to tackle it together and get him back to a healthy weight

tommorang · 29/01/2016 18:48

Should I tell him he is obese

No, talk to him about healthy eating and exercise by all means but you need to be careful how you handle it which is why it is best to seek professional advice

tommorang · 29/01/2016 19:06

He eats realy healthy and I have no snack in the house and I make sure portion sizes are right I also make sure that he has at least 5 portions of fruit and veg.

Then he's getting food elsewhere. School? Friends? Does he have pocket money?

Children don't become overweight without eating the wrong types or quantities of food.

slebmum1 · 29/01/2016 19:09

He must be eating more. Does he exercise?

OldBeanbagz · 29/01/2016 19:10

It sounds very overwight to me. My just 11 year old weighs less than half that though he's only 4ft8in tall.

Don't tell him he's obese. Just start making changes to your lifestyle so he's getting more exercise. And look again at his portion size. Is he snacking outside of home?

Whycantweallgetalong · 29/01/2016 19:14

OP this all sounds rather odd, honestly. You describe your ds as having 'giant breats' and at least '5 rolls of fat' round him, then ask if we think he is obese? Confused
You've also said he eats 'healthy' and right portion sizes, bla bla, then how on earth did he get this big? He must be eating regularly something else or somewhere else and at 11yrs, I'd expect that you know the answer to that.

Sirzy · 29/01/2016 19:21

So what does he eat in a typical day?

tommorang · 29/01/2016 19:22

He can't get food at school as icheck daily what he has eaten and didn't get pocket money and I asked my friend about healthy eating she is a dietian and she says he is eating a normal amount and is realy healthy

OP posts:
Whycantweallgetalong · 29/01/2016 19:28

Your dietician friend said he is healthy? But what you have described and the school's findings contradict this. Why haven't you taken him to see the doctor with your concerns? It could be some kind of hormonal imbalance. Do you really think giant breasts on any boy is normal?

tommorang · 29/01/2016 19:29

I have now booked him an appointment.

www.rcpch.ac.uk/system/files/protected/page/NEW%20Boys%202-18yrs%20(4TH%20JAN%202013).pdf

This chart shows the boys weight to height ratio.

5 foot one is just under 155cm. This is between the 91st and 98th percentiles for an 11 year old boy, so above average height.

60kg is between the 98th and 99.6th percentile for weight for an 11 year old boy, so again it is above average.

That gives him a BMI percentile of just below 91. This would suggest he was overweight for his age.

That's very good and a step in the right direction. I hope you can start to find answers to the weight issue straigh away and there's lots of help on MN too, once you are clearer on what's going on.
