Where on the body does chicken pox show first?

My 14mo has a suspicious looking rash on her bottom and between her legs. Look like mosquito bites but this is very unlikely in the UK this time of year... Chicken pox maybe?

Do they look fluid filled?

Doublebubblebubble · 22/01/2016 09:28

My dcs haven't had it yet but I've always been told it starts behind the ears... I'm probably talking rubbish x

Bellyrub1980 · 22/01/2016 09:31

No, not fluid filled! Look like fresh mosquito bites actually. I guess it could just be heat rash?

None behind the ears! (Now you mention that, I remember my mum saying the same)

It's measles that classically starts behind the ears. I think chicken pox can start anywhere

GunShotResidue · 22/01/2016 09:34

DD's chicken pox started on the back of her thighs. I think if it is chicken pox they become fluid filed very quickly, definitely within 24 hours (according to the GP I took DD to a few months before she actually got CP when I was worried about what turned out to be a viral rash!)

firesidechat · 22/01/2016 09:35

Doesn't sound like chicken pox.

This might help:

It suggests that Double may be right about the ears thing.

Doublebubblebubble · 22/01/2016 09:36

Oh see I know I knew nothing Confused my mum told me this nugget also

Tummy for us. Three spots at bedtime then while tummy and chest and some of back covered by next day. Then limbs and face afterwards. Kind of outwards in a sunbeam pattern if that makes sense.
Most of our friends (but not all) have started on the abdomen

firesidechat · 22/01/2016 09:49

I think my children's spots started on the body - chest and back

Seeline · 22/01/2016 09:52

Both my kids started on the body and then spread out from there.

When I had it I had a huge spot right in the middle of my forehead for a couple of days before the rest appeared - everywhere. I was 15 so thought it was just a spot, rather than CP. felt awful though.

eddiemairswife · 22/01/2016 10:18

3 spots on my thigh. I was 23 in my 1st term of teaching. When I returned to school, half my class were away with it.

mrsplum2015 · 22/01/2016 10:46

My gp said cp is always on the trunk.

I'm pretty sure hand foot and mouth can be in the nappy area, have you googled that?

CurlsLDN · 22/01/2016 10:48

I thought possibly hfm too, that's commonly around the bum and genitals

dementedpixie · 22/01/2016 10:48

I agree that hand foot and mouth can also affect the nappy area. My 2 started chicken pox on their trunk first

Naty1 · 22/01/2016 10:49

I would also suggest hfm

dratsea · 22/01/2016 11:48

Both dc, within 6 inch of umbilicus.

Wardrobespierre · 22/01/2016 11:51

Torso is first usually ime.

HFM can appear anywhere but does commonly affect the genitals and bottom. DS has it mostly on his elbows and knees.

Catpants123 · 22/01/2016 11:57

Yes my dd had hand, foot and mouth which was spots on the bottom.

GruffalosDad · 22/01/2016 11:57

Chicken pox wouldn't look like a rash, so much as seperate spots?
When DS got chicken pox I thought at first they were bites - started behind ear.
DD's started on tummy.
I expect you'll soon know if it's chickenpox as suddenly there will be more spots covering more areas - if not, possibly something else (hand, food, mouth was mentioned above)

Witchend · 22/01/2016 13:54

Dd1-on the temple
dd2-shoulder
ds-top of leg

No consistency there!

ktmummy1 · 22/01/2016 15:13

My dd started on her face (temple). She had a terrible case.

Bellyrub1980 · 23/01/2016 08:28

Thank you for all the replies. I'm so unsure. There are several more spots now, little ones around her genital area radiating around to bigger ones towards the edge of her nappy. Spots are feeling more 'pointed' but not fluid filled. She doesn't appear to be bothered by them at all and is in high spirits.

We're meant be going to an adventure park today... If this is HF&M or CP we should stay away right?

On the other hand she isn't at all ill and the spots are covered... What would you do?

OP posts:
Bellyrub1980 · 23/01/2016 20:31

Ok, now the rash is all over arms and legs. A few on one hand and she had 2 ulcers on her tongue. No temp, in good spirits. Eating well too!

DD's first chicken pox spot was halfway down her side, about where the ribs get to the waist. From distant memory, mine was on my collarbone (still have a scar decades later.
