Help! Huge sore in mouth, high fever, screaming.

Any ideas of what might cause a huge sore on the tongue of a two year old (raised and white, about the size of a five penny piece), plus fever of 39 and almost constant crying? He keeps pointing to have mouth and crying.

I am wondering whether we should head to out of hours but what if it's just a mouth ulcer from a general virus? He's in so much pain though.

Hand foot and mouth? Though that sounds like very large lesion.

Could it be a burn from something?

If he is that distressed I'd take him to a and e just to put my mind at rest.

That sounds like a big sore, might become infected. I'd go to out of hours to be on the safe side... I wouldn't fancy having to eat and drink with a sore that big must be incredibly painful.

He might have scarlet fever? That gives a 'strawberry tongue'

Google primary hepatic gigivostomatits - my ds2 had this before xmas and was very poorly with it.
If it is your ds needs anti viral meds.
It's grim...the Dr told.us that if ds didnt start to drink he would have to be put on a drip.
Good new is after 12 hours on. The anti corals he started to feel better x

He is drinking but hasn't eaten all day. Will only drink with a bottle which I think is because the teat helps his avoid he sore.

I wondered about hand foot and mouth but he has no marks on his hands or feet or anywhere else in his mouth.

I also wondered about a burn but surely he would have screamed out when it happened.

He had been exposed to chicken pox. Could this be the first lesion? But it's been there all day and no others have appeared.

Badders, thanks for that, I googled and it does look similar. It sounds awful. If it is that should I take him to be seen tonight or can it wait until the morning?

Keep staggering pain relief - every 3 hours - so calpol, then ibuprofen...
I froze frubes yoghurt tubes for him as for 2 days it was all he could bear to eat.
It's a very painful Condition but the acyclovir will sort it out x

To be fair you could google 30 things that could be similar. Better to be safe than sorry and ring 111 for trained medical advice op.

We've been to the GP who actually diagnosed tonsillitis. Apparently he has blisters all over his tonsils as well as his mouth and GP thinks it's all parr f the same infection. On top of that he has oral thrush so we have treatment for that too.

Hmm.....really sounds like gingivostomatitis to me!
If he develops mouth ulcers please take him back and get anti virals...antibiotics will do nothing...Ds had blisters in his throat too.
I'm not sure it's something GPS see a lot of tbh...I told the GP that's what I thought it was and he just agreed with me!
