Should DD feel better after 8 days antibiotics for UTI?

My DD has had many health problems, but never a UTI before so I am a bit clueless. It was quite nasty, with blood in wee, but they grew the bugs in a sample and she is on an antibiotic for 10 days that should kill the infection (from E Coli). She is still complaining that it hurts to do a wee. I've googled a bit, but can't find out if this is normal eg just takes a while to calm down?? I'm not sure if I should be making what would be classed as an emergency GP appt for her before the end of the course of meds....

My dd had a similar UTI recently and they only gave her 3days antibiotics but wanted to do another sample to make sure it was clear after. I would see the Dr again if it is still bad toward the end of the 10 days. Also try to take some cranberry juice every day as it can be very helpful.

I'm quite susceptible to UTIs but I've always felt better (or at least started to) within 2 or 3 days of being on antibiotics. What antibiotics is she on? I'd definitely get an urgent doctors appointment, you don't want it turning into a kidney infection or anything nastier than It already is! Hope she feels better soon

For it to be a 10 day course maybe would indicate that it will take a while but You would think that she would have at least had some improvement of symptoms by now, I would ring docs in the morning - maybe ask to speak to practice nurse for advice about if she needs appointment or not.

When I've had UTIs, the correct antibiotic has made me feel better in a day or so. Not completely cured, but definitely not as ill.

If the only symptom at the moment is hurting when she wees, I would wait until day 10 then take her back. If she's at all feverish, or has any other pains I would make one asap.

Thanks for replying - I appreciate it. It sounds like I should get her checked, or at least get another sample looked at. I'll ring tomorrow.
She is on Cefalexin.

My daughter had recurrent UTI as a toddler and she usually felt better after a few days of antibiotics. I'm glad you are getting her re checked as sometimes a different antibiotic is needed. Good luck Xx

My eldest had a UTI a couple of weeks ago. He was on a lot of antibiotics anyway, so the doctor didn't need to prescribe any, but we were advised to make sure my child drank lots of water (at least eight cups) and dilute it with cranberry juice. Doc seemed to think the more he drank, the less it would hurt when he went to the toilet.

It still hurt a week later, but has now completely disappeared. Equally, if there is still a lot of pain, she may need a longer course of antibiotics.

Did the lab report say the E. coli was only susceptible to cefalexin? Just curious as I normally see nitrofuratonin prescribed for e.coli.

But that's adults so maybe it's not recommended for children??

Ive been on cephalexin for 18 months. High doses as well and I still have my UTI! In total ive had its or five years.

D mannose is also good for e.coli but again not sure if it's ok for children.
