parents of visually impaired children

Hello,

A few days ago we were told our beautiful three week old daughter will be legally blind. Is anyone the parent of a visually impaired child and do you have any advice?

Really sorry to hear that OP. There must be people at the RNIB and similar who can offer lots of advice, counselling and support.

Post in sn children? Dd2 has cp and we knew lots of babies and children with VI at the time. Her bf in yr r was VI and they shared a 1-1 key worker.

I worked in a school for visually impaired children. All I can say is they didn't seemed to be let it stop them from doing anything. They lived happy normal lives. There is lots of help available. Forget the stereotypes. Technology can help so much these days, reading out from the Internet etc. I would try not to think too far ahead just yet. Take it one day at a time.

There is lots of support out there - try VICTA and Blind Children UK. They work esp with young people and could be a great support for you. Good luck

I know of a charity called POPSY - Parents of partially sighted Youngsters - that was set up by someone whose dd had similar diagnosis - they may be happy to talk to you :)

Congratulations on the birth of your dd. The RNIB is v helpful. There is much more inclusion of children with vi in mainstream these days - from toys to tv to school. Good luck with the sleepless nights - I don't think I was getting much rest at all when my dc were that age.
