Does your child take an asthma inhaler to school?

DD is 9 and she needs her ventolin inhaler with her. She uses a spacer and the type we use at home is big and awkward so I bought her an Able Spacer last year as I thought it would be more compact. She didn't need to use it too often but the quality wasn't great and it is no longer usable.

Just wondering what other kids do. What spacers do you use and do you have a pouch or bag to protect it?

You should ask for a spare spacer and inhaler and leave it in school, that way it can never be forgotten and everyone in her class should know where it is and be able to access it if she has an attack on school field etc

Yep separate spacer and inhaler left at school. Just in the spacer box with inhaler tucked inside.

Just had a row with his new school(starting reception) because they wanted it left in the school office rather than his class.... the office is in the junior school building across the field and car park

Thanks smurfy. I have spare inhalers and the big spacer for at home. I'm really just looking for something more compact for her to take out and about with her.

Just saw your post wankerchief. I suppose the thing is that she needs to take it to her activities as well as school. School don't hold the inhaler. She keeps it with her.

I'm outside the UK and the spacer we use at home costs €45 so it needs to be looked after. The Able spacer was cheaper but fell apart.

Is it an aerochamber with mask shineyshoes?

That's what we use at home. I see that they have one with a mouthpiece that is smaller but I wonder would it be as effective for dd as the mask. The Able spacer has a detachable mask.

Dd2 has this spacer

It has a mouthpiece like the inhalers, and makes a whistling noise if they are breathing in too quickly, which makes it very accurate.

She has one in her bag with her inhaler, there is one in the office with another inhaler and we have one at home.

Both DCs have an aerochamber and inhaler in their normal bag, their PE bag and a spare is kept in the school office.

That's the one I was looking at hazeyjane. I think I'll order a couple of those for her to take with her.

For the people with multiple spacers and more than one child with asthma - did you have to buy all those?

You can get spacers on prescription, school should keep her inhaler in a ziplock bag, in an asthma box in her class, ours are bright orange. All classes the same.

Ds has severe asthma but he has an inhaler with volumatic spacer in a special bag in class which goes wherever he goes in school then a spare inhaler and spacer in the office

We use the spacers pictured above. There's a yellow one with a mask which we used till around 7 or 8 then we moved to the blue with the mouthpiece .

Ours have all been on prescription with the various inhalers (4 of us in the house so we have quite a collection). We did have a phone call when I ordered a second for school via the repeat prescription but once I explained it was issued with no problems.

School keep each child's kit in a clear zip wallet along with the form which we fill in with details of dose, symptoms etc. Each class has a first aid box which they keep in the classroom and bring with them when they go down to the hall for PE and that sort of thing. I prefer that to the kids keeping their own, mine already manage to loose pretty much everything else.
