Hay fever meds not working for DS (8)

DS is 8 and has suffered dreadfully with hay fever for a few years now. He has cetirizine and eye drops on prescription and I'm religious about doing them morning and night (am a life long sufferer myself). However, they just don't seem to be working. He looks like his eyes have both been punched today they're that red and puffy.

Are there any other antihistamines that we could get as an alternative ? (Piriton did nothing). Just wondering of others' experience with hay fever in children. Tia.

Beclamethasone nasal spray is the only thing that works for DS1.

Ok thanks just seen your reply so don't know if you're still around but would the nasal spray help with the eyes too? Maybe have a cumulative effect?? [clutching at straws...] He really looks dreadful this morning as if he's had an hour sleep all night and cried the rest of the time! I remember that one actually, I used to have it myself, along with tablets and eye drops. Think I'll take him back to gp for a review thanks x
