Should my daughter still be needing sudocreme on her bits at age 6??

Ever since my daughter was a baby I've used sudocreme for her whenever she's had nappy rash or sore bits, but she's now 6 years old and probably twice a week the outer area of her bits and also her bottom sometimes look a bit red and sore, so we are still on the sudocreme. I've always assumed it might be because she doesn't wipe well enough after going to the toilet, but although the sudocreme does help I can't help but think we shouldn't be still needing it at her age. Does anybody else have this issue?

Yes

Dd5 uses it herself before bed
Think her urine stings her

I'm happy to let he use it

ShelaghTurner · 12/05/2015 21:35

Not sudocreme and not as often as that but my 7yo still asks for metanium every so often.

BubbleLight · 12/05/2015 21:45

This might only be useful for my DD. But we have improved this for her by never washing or rinsing hair in the bath, no bubble bath or anything like that, baggier knickers and reminding her not to touch herself too much, as she was prone to fiddling whilst watching TV! She also sleeps in nighties so there is more air around! Hope that helps.

BubbleLight · 12/05/2015 21:46

Oh yes and teaching her to wipe a bit better! But I often wipe her after a poo at home just to help it out a bit.

mappemonde · 12/05/2015 21:51

Dd is 5 and quite often seems a bit sore/red and I'm sure it's from not wiping properly at school. I wipe her bottom for her at home and dry her really carefully after washing. We use metanium and occasionally canestan if required. It's improved since she's not needed pull ups at night (recent). Dd2 is 3 and never seems to get sore but then we wipe her more.

Grittzio · 12/05/2015 21:51

Yes my DD6 has it applied every day, we need to keep it airy down there!

Not unusual here either :)

Yy to the above, nighties, "airing" , care with hygiene and limiting soaps etc.

Also mine are sensitive to fruit, it seems to make the wee quite acidic, and burn. I had to limit fruit juice, strawberries, tomatoes, apples etc.

Oh god this has reminded my my dd used to wake up crying with itchy/sore bits every now and again.

I think I eventually twigged it was when she'd had her hair washed, as PP said.

I'd shower her and use sudocreme, although that's quite harsh so maybe bepanthem (sp?) would be better.

7yo dis has started getting "chef's crack" so he puts cream on that too.

NightsOfGethsemane · 12/05/2015 22:12

My 6 year old still uses it on occasion. I think she sometimes doesn't wipe properly at school. She applies it herself now though.

TwiceAsNiceAsIceAndaSlice · 12/05/2015 22:14

Yes my 6yr old dd has a dab on every so often. With her I think it is not bothering to wipe after doing a wee despite constant reminders Hmm

Magicpaintbrush · 12/05/2015 22:18

Oh thank goodness she's not the only one! Thank you so much for your replies, it's put my mind at ease about it. It's difficult to know how best to keep them clean and healthy in that area, for example she used to wash there with shower gel, then I worried that was too harsh so switched her to a little bit of femfresh wash at bath time, but lately it's just been plain water in the hope that would help - although there's been no difference tbh. How often to wash there is also a tricky one - either too much or not enough could lead to soreness.

My gp recommended not to bath but just shower. I only shower my dds now, I rarely get complaints and one of ten suffers from vulval dermatitis. I def wouldn't use shower gels etc. even as an adult I get bad reactions to products made by Dove etc. I use just plain in unfragranced soap. I have 4 Dds 8 and under btw, much less complaints, or use of sudocreme/metatanium since they all shower.
