stomach pain in 8 year old

DD has been complaining of stomach pain today, little bit this morning, got worse this afternoon at school. She has a baseline pain which she said is under her ribs (from the last bone and under, she says), slightly to the left - and along with this episodes of acute pain that causes her to cry out. No diarrhoea, and no usual signs of constipation (she has a runny bowel movement yesterday, after having some movicol as she sometimes gets constipation and had sore belly the day before, this is a different type of pain). Her belly is a swollen and bit solid to touch.

It is hurting her to move, pain increases as she sits up, or lays flat on her back. Bent down to pick up something and cried out, could not up from the floor without crying out in pain, needed help getting up.

Additionally, she had a slightly raised temp this morning, complained of a slight earache, bumps on the back of her tongue were raised, slight sore throat, eased with ibuprofen before school. Slightly raised temp this evening, but no high fever.

Could this be constipation? stomach migraine? a bug? Pain is not moving to her right side (checked in case appendicitis), but is getting worse (had more medicine this evening when she got home from school, due some more so might be that medicine is wearing off?).

What signs should I look out for now/over the weekend that might need to have GP attention?

I had thought it might indigestion? but, would this be likely at her age? and all day/getting worse and with movement?

Appendicitis?

I have recently had cause to call ooh doctors with two of my children and they were more concerned about the stomach pain than any other symptoms. DS is at hospital for further tests next month.

I immediately thought appendix, especially as she has the high temp. Perhaps it would be worth giving 111 a call.

PavlovtheCat · 01/05/2015 20:15

would appendicitis cause left sided pain though? as the appendix is on the right? I had a grumbling appendix at the same age, for a few years until I and it removed aged 12. I wonder if it's hereditary.

She has just had a bowel movement, normal, so not a stomach bug, or not gastroenteritis one anyway. And says it still hurts.

just do they have any ideas of what might be causing the bugs in the child having tests? Hope s/he is not in too much discomfort with it.

DD does get reasonably regular sluggish bowels, even though she eats really well/healthily (plenty of fruit and veg, lots of water), but she says this pain is different.

DS was diagnosed with gastritis but medicine hasn't made it clear up so after bloods and stool tests we're now at the hospital. The other one never got a diagnosis for why she had constant stomach pain for days.

My now 7 year old had appendicitis last year. He complained of a tummy ache in the morning but he'd played football so I put it down to that. It stayed all day and by about 4pm he was in tears. He was pale and had a temp so I called 111 and they said he should be seen so I made an OOH appointment (Sat). He was admitted and had emergency surgery in the middle of the night. I'd thought it was constipation or a tummy bug so ended up sleeping in a hospital gown - had baby number 4 with me too, who was only a couple of months old and he managed to mess up his spare clothes within the first hour there! The nurses were amazing...anyway, I digress.

I think with the temp, it's definitely worth a call to 111 and probably an OOH appt, just to be sure. Appendicitis can cause pain on the left side too.

Hope it's just wind or something like that - keep us posted. Good luck
