8 year old lump at front of neck

My DD, who is 8, pointed out to me tonight quite a large lump at the front of her neck where her throat is, I think around the thyroid area. She says it's been there a few weeks. Of course I've googled and of course the C word has come up. Am I right to be concerned?

So is it right in the middle just above the bony bit? Mine gets lumpy around there when I'm run down or coming down with something. It doesn't have to mean cancer there are other things it could be. If it doesn't go away you should take her to the doctor but don't panic yet!

Most likely a cyst. Thyroid cancer is almost unheard of in children. Make an appointment though & they can arrange an ultrasound x

Look at thyroglossal cyst Flowers

Could be. Will try not to panic until we've seen the GP.

Checked the lump again this morning and I think it might be smaller than it was last night, seems more pea sized than I remember, but I could be wrong. DD now says it's only been there a couple of days NB. DD has very poor concept of time due to dyslexia/memory problems so hard to be sure what she means sometimes!

So, GP or wait & see??

Make a routine appointment but then cancel if it disappears x

perhaps an enlarged thyroid gland, Hashimotos is a fairly common thyroid disorder in children. Simple blood test will confirm/rule out.

To update: she came out with a cold the next day. The lump has now gone :-)

Still get her thyroidchecked. I have hashimotos and slogged on for years ithout treatment while the ymptoms crept up on me. No one could tell, least of all my family.

My son had something similar- A lump right at the top of his neck under his chin. It would get big then go down. One day it was huge and he caught his zip on it and it exploded snot (yup) Turned out it was a gland or something that was being trapped with mucus and needed to be taken out. Had a minor surgery (in and out in a few hours) and we haven't had an issue since.

Still get it checked- just in case.
