How do you tell if childs finger is broken?

dd has hurt hre finger, cant remember how. It is swollen and painful to move, she is holding it crooked.

I think it is not an emergency so can wait till after school and see, should I buddy strap it? Thats all they would do if it was broken anyway isnt it?

I think I would consider it enough of an emergency to at least get a doctors appointment first thing or minor injuries unit if you think it really might be broken

Definitely give it some protection; if you really think it could be broken go somewhere they can X-ray it - check out your local options but a minor injuries unit might be able to do it.

SilverBirch2015 · 27/03/2015 07:45

It does need to be Xrayed and if broken checked it is aligned properly to heal straight. If you have a minor injuries unit near you they can X-ray and then refer on to the nearest hospital's next hand clinic.

The earlier you can get to minor injuries they less of a queue they will have, and if needing a referral best to get it seen ASAP because its nearly the weekend.

The only way to tell is with an X ray

and if it is broken and displaced, they will do more than neighbour strap it

DD had this lately, we went to Minor Injuries who sent us to A&E to get it X-rayed. The nurse there said we didn't have to rush though. Initially they didn't think there was a fracture but phoned me a few days later to say there was. She didn't have any strapping though, just a sling to keep her fingers elevated. It has healed very nicely so far.

we have a really good childrens A&E here. It isnt obviously out of shape or anything and dd is ot in pain except wwhen moving it.
