What to do for my child, who has had a constant cough all day/evening?

My 4 year old has had a bit of a cold and now has a nasty dry irritable cough with it. He has coughed non stop all day and this evening after waking up coughing this morning. He already has a ventolin inhaler which he had a few months ago for a cough that wouldn't go away (he's suffered a lot from persistent coughs in the past) but lately he hasn't had a cough, until now.

Doctors usually shrug me off saying it's his cold, it's not on his chest etc. And make me feel like I'm washing their time taking him. It was a nice out of hours doctor who gave him the inhaler last time.

I don't think he's ever had a cough this bad. It's dry, irritable and pretty much constant.

He's been in steamy bathroom before bed, has vapor rub on his chest but nothing's helping.

Any ideas?

Have you tried a humidifier in his room at night? Ds4 has issues with his tonsils and this was suggested to us. It hasn't been a magical solution but has definitely improved the situation quite a bit. Might be worth a try?

Put vapour rub in his feet at night then put socks on, also put some on his Adams apple. Don't ask Me how it works but it does, my 5yr ds gets a lot of coughs this is the only thing that helps to ease it
