2 year olds tooth has abscess., dentist says to extract :-(

In November my 2 year old fell and chipped both her front teeth. She now has an abcess above one of them and my dentist is recommending we get the tooth removed. They sedate them at the hospital. Anybody else been through this? Hubby and me are so upset and really don't want her to have to through it. Any advice appreciated

The alternative is her having a chronic infection and pain until she is six?

Why don't you want her to have it?

I had this done personally when I was about 5 (so 26yrs ago) I went to a specialist clinic, they gave me a GA through a gas mask and when I woke up I was given my tooth in a bag. I actually have very happy memories of the experience. Not sure how much procedures will have changed but hope you will have the same experience!

I should probably clarify that dd has had no pain and the tooth is in way wobbly.

No way wobbly!

An abscess above a baby tooth can cause problems with the developing adult tooth. If you leave it are you happy to take that risk?

No way would I let my two year old's tooth be extracted AWAKE. I can see that it needs to be done, but I would insist it's done under some sort of sedation.

It wouldn't be possible to extract the tooth of a 2yo without sedation or GA.

Think they will sedate her and give her a local. I'm worried she'll still feel it though and be traumatised

She really won't. I extract teeth on young children regularly. You'll be more traumatized than she will. Infections can be very dangerous for children, please take the dentist's advice.

My 5 year old did exactly the same she is very needle phobic and the dentist just kept sending her away with more antibiotics until she got thrush. I changed dentists and he was confident he could take it out under a local. I was reluctant but he was very good. We got there on the day. He had frozen on full blast and a tiara he sat her in the chair and explained everything. Her tooth was out before I new it she didn't even flinch. We're were in and out in 20 mins with a tooth in a bag and a happy little girl with a new tiara.

You have to do what is best for your child. It's difficult at times but since the tooth has been out she's been so much better. Her adult teeth are starting to come through now and she has only good memories of the dentist

Ekkk! I went through similar. My 2 and a half year old dd fell over and litterally shattered one of her front teeth, it was in bits but some of it stayed attached to the root, the whole thing was awful! I took her to A&E and they extracted the rest of the tooth under GA, dd was amazing she just led there while they popped a mask over her face, the procedure took no more than 10 mins!

DD is now rather proud of her gap and shows it off, occasionally pokes her tongue through the gap too

I would definitely go ahead! But surely it should be under GA because of your DDs age? Maybe your dentist has got it wrong?

Im talking to my dentist again on Friday to get some more clarity but will be asking for a referal to th edentist hospital, where she will have the tooth removed. One question: will it affect her speech/eating and will the gap (front top tooth) close? A

Plenty of 2-3 year olds have to have all their baby teeth extracted and they manage to eat and speak until their adult teeth erupt.
Her permanent tooth will erupt at 6 or 7 so the gap doesn't need to close.

this happened to my dd when she was 4 she's now 21, they gave her gas in the dentist and she was out like a light came round about five minutes later minus tooth. she had her gap for ages but was better than repeated abscesses, she can't even remember it.
