7 week old in hospital with bronchialitis - any experience?

My 7 week old was admitted to hospital on Sunday/Monday with suspected bronchialitis. She had to be put on oxoxygen in a sort of head box. We can't go home until she has a stable 24hrs without needing oxygen.

Has anyone had any experience of this and how long did you remain in hospital for? Its hard juggling the hospital and our other two dc. I feel guilty on all of them!

Ds3 had this when he was 6 weeks old, he was in for a week until he was stable in regular air.

Mine was in at 6 weeks old. She stayed about 6 days including her very first christmas. It was awful and I cried a lot....but they do get better and the hospital staff/doctors know what they are doing.

I was also exhausted up every two hours pumping breast milk. I also had other children, thank god my parents were here for christmas so they helped. Can you call family to help with the other ones?

My DD had it at 8 weeks old. Very scary but she recovered in about a week. Hope dc is better soon

Ditto here, ds had it at 4 weeks, 9 weeks and 13 weeks, at 17 weeks now we hope he's done with it, it's scary, but when then send you home make sure you get open door access for a week or so which gave me a bit more confidence in having him home!!

My DS was 6 weeks old - iin hospital for 6 days- but discharged on Xmas eve. My daughter was 19 months old so couldn't understand what was happening. It was really frightening and stressful at the time but no lasting damage. . She is in the best place and will get excellent care.

Thank you all. I really hope she's okay for her first Christmas. Family have already helped tbh, think they're feeling pretty exhausted now too so don't really want to ask again..

Just glad I took her in, we are on a ward with other babies, breaks my heart to hear them sound so poorly. I hate it.

My 4 month old had it last Christmas and was very poorly. He spent a week in ICU fully ventilated. Hospital was fantastic. He have us a real scare, but has not had any reoccurrence. Hope baby is better soon. You are in the right place!

I was in with my dc2 last year. Think my dh and I were more traumatised than him. He got better really quickly when they cleared his nasal passages and he was able to feed.

DS had it at 8 weeks and was in hospital for 12 days, 5 of which were in hdu.

Generally it's worse between days 3 and 5 then gets better quite quickly

My son had it when he was about 6 months old, two weeks in hospital and weeks and weeks to get over the cough!
He s 6 now though and has never had a chest infection since.

Most babies just spend a couple of days in hospital but my son's oxygen stats just dropped whenever they took him off the oxygen.

The consultant eventually just let him home as he seemed better .

My DD had it at 4 weeks old. She was in for 2 weeks with 4 days in ICU. She spent her first Christmas in hospital. Once she started getting better she picked up quickly though which was unbelievable at the time. She's had a couple of chest infections & suspected bronch since, but nothing as bad. I really hope your DD improves & gets home for Christmas.

we were in your position this time last year. ds was 5 weeks.

we were in for a week, twas awful. but no lasting damage.

he had oxygen and was fed with a ng tube.

Dd had it at three/4 weeks old. We were in 5 days I think.

day 3 is the worst they cab get really bad. We had crap for about two or three days then a head box.

on plus side she went from struggling to breathe to desperate to feed and chewing bandage in the space of 24 hours when she finally started getting better.

Dds had it twice. If your worried about long term then so far she has shown no signs of lung problems like asthma yet and she's 4.

Dd had it at about 10 weeks old. Was only in the head box thing for about 36 hours and home after 2 nights I think. Bloody scary but all fine. Was the only time too - she's a robust 4 year old now who is rarely ill. Hope you get out quick.

Our lovely, happy, energetic four year old had this at five weeks. Ambulance ride to hospital in the middle of the night, DH home with our two year old so I felt very alone and frightened. She had oxygen and slowly got better. We were in for four days iirc. Also around christmas time and just one week before we were due to pack up everything and move to another country. Horrible, scary, lonely time. Get help from family if you possibly can, even for short moments.
I was breastfeeding so essentially had to stay with DD2 to feed her. I would express one extra bottle each day so that the nurses could do one feed and during that time would rush to get DD1 from nursery and give her her tea and spend a little time with her.
DD2 does get chest infections more easily, but so do I so I don't know if that's a side-effect or not.

Dd2 had this at 2 weeks (she was 4 weeks prem as well) she stayed in for a week until she was able to breathe on her own. It is very scary but they are in the best place. I hope your baby is home soon.

Ds3 had it aged 3 days and was in an oxygen box for a week Caught the RSV form from one of his siblings. Have they tested to see if she has it?

Unfortunately he then had repeated episodes as an infant/toddler and now has severe asthma.

My advice would be to be vvv careful with avoiding other people and children colds/coughs this Winter. I know people will say it's being precious but actually once you've been there with them in hospital you really don't want to go again.

Dd was 11/12 months when she was in hospital with suspected bronchiolitis. She was in hospital for 12 days. 10 of those she needed oxygen. They also found whatever infection she had had infected her heart muscle so there were added complications and nearly 2 years later it's still ongoing
