15 month old really poorly - when to see doctor?

Any advice really appreciated. Very phlegmy, weak, pale, fast breathing, coughing, no interest in food - wet nappies tho. She looks dreadful and no better in 5 days. At what point is this more than normal cold/fever?

Erm, now? Fast breathing is not good. If you can see her chest being pulled in as she breathes, you need to get to hospital - pneumonia can come on very quickly in young children

I'd ring the doctor. Have you checked her throat or ears for gunk or signs of infection?

That doesn't sound great, the fast breathing could be due to high temp, what's her temp?

I would phone NHS24 & get her an appointment today.

Thanks for quick replies. Temp 38 before paracetamol. Breathing sounds really gunky, nose streaming. She's just so listless, not normal at all.

No doctor I've ever seen with my children has begrudged it. They usually say they'd rather check and reassure than have parents worrying at home or children becoming more ill.

As a mother of 2 children who have had more than their share of pneumonia and respiratory distress -

Call 111.

Fast breathing (how fast? Over 40 per minute for a couple of hours and she needs to be seen, over 50 and you need to get her to hospital). Count when she's at rest and count for a minute if possible, but remember what number you were on at 30 seconds so you can double if she wriggles or something. Children breathe fast if they have a fever, but it can also be a sign of respiratory distress. If she seems to be pulling in her stomach, or between her ribs or between her collarbones when breathing you need to take her to hospital.

Fever not too high but the listlessness is worrying.

Give her extra milk/fluids.

Good, hope she's ok. Trust your instincts. The two times I have ignored my instincts have resulted in (1) pneumonia and (2) high dependency unit. I really regretted it.

If there's any chest recession (pulling in), film on your phone as sometimes the cold/car journey can calm them down and they look ok when you get there, only to get worse when back at home. If you have filmed what's happening the doctor can see and take it seriously if needed.

We're back - it's a lung infection. On the front and back apparently, so no wonder she's breathing fast.
Got antibiotics now so hopefully it'll clear fast.
